IEC Mod to Denon AVR2800

I just purchased a Denon AVR2800.

Why?
Because it was the silver chassis version


and I picked it up for only $70.

It currently has a 2 prong power cord plug


I seen a mod'd AVR2800 with this power cord online yesterday!



And now I want to do the same for some DIY fun!

Now my questions.
1.Since there is only a positive and negative coming from the connector from the board, can I still add a 3 prong IEC male socket to the chassis of the unit?


2.If so, what about that 3rd wire that's in a 3 prong IEC power cable?

There is no positive and negative. It's hot and neutral. The third wire is a 'grounding' or 'earthing' conductor. It attaches to that large metal thing called the 'chassis'. If I were you, I'd consider having someone who knows these things perform the modification for you. You are dealing with potentially dangerous stuff there.

1. Yes, it can be dangerous. If you miswire, or short, it could burn your house down.

2. Can you just wrap the existing power cord? It could look nearly identical.

3. If you terminate the cable yourself, you could use a 2 conductor power cable. But there is a danger that someone else in the future might use it for another component, if you get hit by a truck or something. No way to tell that the ground conductor is absent.

If you knew what you were doing, it would be easy to use an IEC socket, and just leave the ground terminal disconnected at the component, and use a standard IEC cable. But you could screw it up, and kill someone.

You really shouldn't add a grounded socket to the back of the AVR, if it's not grounded.

You could physically defeat the ground hole on the socket so a standard IEC cord couldn't be used.

Seems like a lot of risk and trouble for no benefit.

thanks for the input.
after reading the above info, I've just decided to dress up the current cord with some techflex and nicer looking 2 prong plug and call it a day.
