40-150hz/crossover help

just got a subwoofer but i feel as though it doesnt help me much, ive got wharfedale zaldek which have good woofers, i wanted a subwoofer anyway.
now ive got the ability to choose from 40-150hz, i was told to put it on 40hz from one guy and from another 150hz, i was also told to play around with crossover on my receiver, my question is.
what should i put my subwoofer on for the cleanest bass.
atm its to boomy and my zaldeks perform better.

+1 to maxing out the crossover on the sub itself and setting the crossover on the AVR to 80Hz (at least for starters).

Also, if you haven't done so already, do the sub crawl to find two or three good locations for your sub. Try it out in all those locations and leave it in the one where it sounds the best. It's possible that the spot you have it in currently is more prone to "boominess" or "muddiness" than another comparably-good spot in your room might be.

does maxing mean putting it at 150 or 40?
and can i put it on my bed where i watch from to test?, it wont matter if its sitting on a bed then on a floor?

Make sure your speakers are set to "small" in the receivers speaker settings.

I also agree with other folks on maxing out the crossover control on the sub (150Hz) and setting the crossover point on the AVR to 80Hz, assume that your other speakers can go down to 80Hz or lower (preferably 70Hz or lower).

Your receiver should have automatic calibration software to set up your speakers correctly.called YPAO I believe. Read your manual and learn how to do this correctly and it will answer all your questions. Usually you can find user made guides for this online as well which offer tips and tricks to get better results. Good luck and if you have already done this then still look up the user guides because it will explain all these tips you are getting in this thread but it will tell you why to set it up this way as well.

i have that ypao control, should i use it?
also i wanted to know if i set the sub on my bed and then crawl around the room would that still work? what way do i face the woofer? is it ok that its sitting on something soft rather than a hard floor?

Doesnt matter the direction or what is sits on as long as the sub is not moving when bass hits. If the box moves because it is not secured correctly then you will actually lose sound. Google "subwoofer crawl" for more info but basically put the sub where you normally sit and play a bass heavy song while crawling around the room and wherever it sounds the loudest then that is where you locate it. If you have a corner that is diagonally from the listening position then just put it there because 90% of the time that will be the best spot for it.

i have a corner like that, thats where im putting it atm but im getting to much boom bass, on my wharfedale woofers i get really good accurate bass.
i kinda regret getting a sub but i couldnt hold myself

I agree with everything except the bolded part. Placing it where is sounds "loudest" is probably placing it where it excites the most room modes. I would look for the spot where it sounds the smoothest, with the best articulation of the different bass notes. This would likely be the spot where the fewest modes are excited, or excited the least.

In my room it does matter, unfortunately, which way the sub faces. If I face the subs towards me I get a big null at 50hz, turn it sideways firing parrallel to the wall and the null disappears. I like the subs facing forward so it's a bit frustrating that I have that room interaction - but so it is.
