Upgrade decision: HTIB, receiver + separate speakers, or Oppo?

Hello,

I made another thread where I was currently trying to decide whether or not an OPPO player is worth it. One of the primary reasons I would like one is to watch Region 2 Blurays and the like. Basically, I'm looking to upgrade my setup, and I thought I might start with a new Bluray player. Others have suggested that I start with HTIB or a receiver, etc.

Currently, this is what I have:

Samsung - LN40A4650
(purchased in 2008).

Playstation 3 (also purchased in 2008) - the original, not the Slim.

Logitech Z5500 (hooked up to the PS3 via optical cable).

So, where should I allocate my money? What needs to be upgraded? I'm thinking perhaps not the Bluray player but first a decent receiver and some speakers.

Should I go for a HITB? Receiver and then separate speakers? The reason I'm leaning towards an HTIB is because I'm in a small one bedroom apartment, and it may be a while before I find myself in a more permanent place of residence (when it would be more appropriate to start building a speaker set up, I think).

My budget is preferably around the $600 mark but, if it's essential and makes sense, I'm willing to consider going up $1000 or $1500.

Thanks.

Note: If I were to go for the HTIB upgrade, I would want something that would not only improve my Bluray watching but also fit in nicely with a vinyl player purchase that I make further down the line.

I might start with a decent Home Theater Receiver and build from there. There are great close-outs right now on the xx12 model Denon's all over the place. You should be able to find a 1712 for about $300 which leaves you some room for some speakers off the bat too. The 1712 has Audyessy Multi XT which will balance and equalize your room and speaker choices relatively well. I upgraded an old Yamaha a few months ago with a 1912 I got for $399 and I'm still amazed by the difference. I guess I didn't know as much as I thought I did about setting up a system. Plus adding Audyessy really helped balance everything out.

If you're feeling like doing some DIY for speakers after you get a receiver I'm sure the $500-600 you still have to spend can be turned into something that will sound pretty great by the guru's in this forum.

if you have a large white wall, a projector might make you pump your fists in the air while not disturbing your neighbors. 120" diagonal thrown on a wall really ups the 'fun' factor for movie night. a used projector from 1-2 generations ago throws a nice bright image. the bulb will burn down over time and they are expensive to replace, so that is part of the cost.

the other thing that you may take a look at is a better subwoofer to supplement what you have there, not so much so that you can super loud, but so that you can go super deep.

Why would I need to upgrade the TV, though? It's the best part of my set up, currently, is it not?

I have a 60" in my room, 110" for my Living room/ theater and I still the screen is small!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When I lived in an apartment, our main viewing display was a 50" samsung plasma.I though it was big until I moved to my new House. I think a tv is like bass, your impressed at first then you get accustomed to it and demand more!

For your audio I would recommend the overnight sensations, and a $200 last year model receiver. subwoofwe, Bic F12 ?

So, are you able to build your own speakers?
