Soundproofing advice on Existing Basement room w/pics

So I'm still kicking around the idea of tearing down my entire ceiling to do soundproofing but there are obstacles in other areas of the basement that are making me think I will not benefit from doing so.

My dilema, I have added a new gaming section which was once walled off, but since all my plumbing runs in the ceiling I've decided to just spray the ceiling flat black and to not do a drop ceiling due to height problems. So basically with music at a decent level in can be heard in the master bedroom and living room above even with all doors to the basement and upstairs doors closed.

Currently I beleive the basement ceiling just has R-13 in btw the joists with one layer of 1/2" drywall. Take a look at my layout from floorplanner and tell me what you think. Is all of the opened sections of ceiling going to just negate anything I do? I was going to do DD and GG on the subfloor btw the joists in both the new game room section as well as the unfinished section under the master bedroom. If I could at least eliminate sound from getting to the bedroom that would be awesome.

The little gray squares in the floorplanner sketch is my 6" recessed lights
The last picture on the right is looking from the projector section towards the unfinished game room section, right behind the pole is my main HVAC line that runs from left to right.

Nothing you do short of major construction/modification is going to eliminate the sound bleeding into the rest of the house. Although with planning you can greatly reduce it.

I'm surprised your ceiling has any insulation in it at all. GG & DD is an effective solution, but you can do better with very little extra work. I suggest:
1. Installing 2x4 blocking (4" side facing the floor) between your rafters. Do not install these flush. For example the top of 2x4 to the bottom of the rafter should be 2 5/8" leaving room for furring channels.
2. Install insulation in the ceiling
3. Mount Furring Channel to the 2x4s for the entire length of the room
4. Then use sound isolation clips to mount the first layer of drywall to the furring channels. This should give you about a 1/2" gap between drywall and rafter. YMMV Gaps and measures will vary based on manufacture specific product purchased.
5. GG another Drywall layer to the first.

Sounds complicated, it's not. You can Google or search on here for more info. The dedicated Theater forum has tons of posts on this method with pictures.

BTW: Since you have insulation I'll assume your recessed lights are IC rated. If not fix that issue. One reason, Fire, second, vented lights release sound into the ceiling.

So that's the ceiling.. Now you need to worry about the HVAC lines.
At a minimum I suggest:
1. Wrap the HVAC lines in a mass loaded barrier.
2. Install vent/return silencers
Ideally I would remove the main HVAC line behind the poll and replace it with an insulated soundproofed line.
This link will give you idea of solutions. There are other products/methods available that are cheaper and most costly than this. Search it.

You'll need to decide where to spend time and money though. In my house more sound comes through the HVAC system than floors/ceilings.

Good Luck

Forgot I had this image. This should clarify the sound proofing instructions.
