Pioneer 5080HD to Panasonic 55VT50 or 60GT50???

I'm looking to upgrade primarily the size and to get a 1080p display. As of now I do NOT have room for a 65 so that's out. The 60 is really pushing it but could probably be done.

I am leaning towards the 55VT50 because it gives me plenty of picture controls to dial the set in and I think coming from the Pioneer, I'll want to tweak the set to squeeze the most out of it. Right now my viewing distance is about 9 feet away. However, it is becoming increasingly likely that we will build a house early next year and the VT will wind up in a theater room where the seating will likely be closer to the set. Likely 7 to 8 feet, maybe a bit closer for the first row.

The wife ultimately wants something smaller downstairs at the new house, probably a 40 or 46.

Thoughts?

I'd go VT50 (IMO, it's plenty big from 7'-9' away).

It sounds like the 55VT50 would suit your long-term goal better than a larger 60" 60GT50 or 60ST50.

There are no more 1080p Plasmas being made below the 50" screen size, and no more 46 inchers at all, and the only remaining 42 inchers being made are bottom of the barrel 720p models so she's going to have to either bump it up to a 50" size to get good picture quality with something like a 50" ST50/GT50 or 51" PNE6500/PNE7000 etc, or settle for the relatively crappy picture quality of something smaller (entry level 720p Plasma or some sort of overpriced LCD or LED LCD that still won't look as good).

If you can hurry up and grab a remaining 42UT50 (Pauls) or 46ST30 (Amazon) before they're all gone and stash it away that might be a good alternative if a 50 incher is completely out of the question.

My 5080 has been moved from the "man cave" to living room and has been replaced by a 60gt50 and I am VERY pleased.

The jump in size and the features of the tv are awesome. Picture wise I would say its better than my 5080 but I still ADORE that tv

If I were you I would take the extra size of the gt50. I originally bought a 55st50 and took it back for a 60gt50 and I am glad I did its perfect for my room

Trying to decide between the 55GT50 and 60GT50. Seating distance would be about 11 feet. This would be my first flat screen TV. Replacing a 27 inch CRT.
