Onkyo s3400 speaker upgrade

I bought the onkyo s3400 system a while back and I'm getting that upgrade itch again. I want to upgrade the receiver but I feel the speakers have to go first.

This is the speaker set I'm looking at:

"MartinLogan MLT-2 5.1CH Premium Home Theater Speaker System Black System"

I would post a link but I just signed up on the forums and I am unable to yet.

My question is will the onkyo s3400 receiver be able to power these speakers? Thanks in advance.

The MLT-2 series is certainly a nice satellite speaker package. But if you have the room, you can do better by upgrading to speakers with larger drivers and a better sub, even if you have to start with the front left, right, and center speakers and use the rest of the Onkyo package in the mean time.

And yes. That Onkyo receiver will be OK to power other speakers. Upgrade it last.

I will definitely take that into account and look at my options as far as just swapping out the front left and center. Rather than asking every time if my receiver can power certain speakers, can you shed some light as to what exactly I should look for when deciding if my receiver can handle certain speakers?

You receiver will perform better with 6-ohm speakers

Power Output
Front L/R 110 W/Channel (6 ohms, 1 kHz, 1%, 1 channel driven, FTC)
Center 110 W (6 ohms, 1 kHz, 1%, 1 channel driven, FTC)
Surround L/R 110 W/Channel (6 ohms, 1 kHz, 1%, 1 channel driven, FTC)

Dynamic Power
160 W (3 ohms)
125 W (4 ohms)
85 W (8 ohms)

Okay so my best bets is a speaker at 110 watts max at a 6 ohm resistance.
Sounds good but another question.

I was looking at some speakers where they gave a power rating in a range but in terms of long term and short term. I'll copy and paste it so you can look at it and explain.

Front Speaker Amplifier Power Output: 100 watts long term / 140 watts short term

Center Speaker Amplifier Power Output: 80 watts long term / 120 watts short term

Surround Speaker Amplifier Power Output: 60 watts long term / 100 watts short term

I do not get concerned about short term power - the main thing is to
not under-power or over-power speakers. Your receiver can handle a
lot of speakers. You can play 8 ohm speakers - your receiver is more
suited for 6 ohms nominal.

After a lot of research I decided to go with bigger speakers than the MLT-2's I was originally looking at. I demoed a bunch of speakers and really liked Martin Logan's motion series. I was speaking to an employee at my part time job and he has me a bit confused on what my receiver is capable of.

Basically I'm looking into replacing my onkyo s3400 speakers with Martin Logan Motion 6 or 8 for the center channel and either Motion10s/Motion 4s or Motion 4s/Motion 2s for the fronts and surround.

Will my receiver be able to power this? In reference to their power rating I would be able to power them. But from what he was telling me, the higher end receivers have amps for each channel but mine doesn't so I would need more power to run these speakers.

Is this right or is he misinformed? Thanks for all the help. I appreciate it.

Your receiver will do just as well as any budget receiver. You'll be fine.

The receiver can play other speakers - however, I would not mix
and match too many different ohm speakers. This receiver has
a dynamic range of only 85 watts for 8 ohms (1 channel). Some
of these Motions are different ohms. Use it for now, and maybe
upgrade in the future. This is a budget friendly receiver, and there
will be better ones around. Remember to watch the overall volume.

Okay I think I'm going to decide against the motion 10s and stick with the motion 6 and either (4) "motions 4s" or (2) "motion 4s" and (2) "motions 2s". I really don't want to be worrying about blowing up my speakers or receiver haha (exaggeration obviously but you get the point)

Don't mean to keep asking the same question but it seems as if some are confident I'd be okay (obviously they'd sound better with a more powerful receiver in which I intend to get later) while others aren't so sure if my reciever can handle it. Will my receiver be able to handle any combination of motions 2's, 4's, and 6's?
