Denon AVR-1612 inputs

Hello,

I am a "newbie" type and please bear with this basic question. I am trying to hook up my wife's VHS player with the RCA cable (white, yellow, and red) to my Denon AVR-1612. My problem is that there appears to be only 2 RCA setups on the Denon. One is on the CBL/SAT input(HDMI or RCA) and the DVD input(HDMI or RCA). I am currently using both CBL/SAT and DVD inputs with HDMI connections to a cable box and a dvd player.

Is the only option to disconnect the DVD player HDMI cable from the Denon DVD input and connect to another HDMI input on the Denon(and then connect the VHS player to the Denon DVD RCA input)? Or what are my options? Thanks in advance.

Could you just use a quick select (1,2, or 3) and set the input for the RCA port? That's what I do

Steve, while I feel it is NOT a good thing to keep a VCR in the mix (I tried to no avail with my sister on this point), have no fear, you can connect the VCR via analog and keep the HDMI too.

The easiest way is to connect via HDMI, the DVD player to the BD HDMI input and the Cable/Satellite to the Game HDMI input. Then connect the VCR to whichever component in you want to. The inputs are just labeled, doesn't mean those particular sources HAVE to get plugged in there.

While both of the suggestions above are excellent...

Keep in mind the 1612 will not convert that composite signal to HDMI, it has no transcoding or upconversion built into the AVR (regarding video switching) so your VHS deck video will not be visible on HDMI via the AVR. Composite video will only come through the Yellow MONITOR output on the AVR.

Your best option is to simply send the video from the VHS deck directly to the display and use an analog audio input on the AVR for the audio from the VHS deck. You'll then have to switch inputs on the display and select the proper audio input on the AVR.

* You can use the DOCK Audio input for your VHS deck.

I believe the 1612 allows you to rename the inputs to make source selection less confusing while looking at the AVR.

Best of luck,
Jason

Thanks to all 3 suggestions(Jason, Splicer, & Kevin) and I may try them all to see what best fits my setup. I appreciate it.

Likely will just combine all 3 ideas...

Thanks for all the advice. I am still having a problem with the RCA inputs. I decided to set up the RCA inputs for the VHS player on the Denon, but no luck. I can get sound, but no video. I chose , on the setup screen, video and audio via cable and not HDMI. But I get no video. RCA cables are red, white, and yellow, and I put them in the correct input colors. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

If you connected the composite (yellow) video cable from the VCR directly to the Denon, did you ALSO connect another yellow video cable from the Denon's MONITOR OUT to a composite IN on your TV? Reread post #4. Composite video can't use the HDMI connection from the AVR-1612 to TV. That's why Jason suggested you connect video directly to the TV. Also see page 7 of your owner's manual for a diagram.
