Just saw that they were on special while looking at some other things.

It's in the summer sale circular. According to the front cover it will last until 6/30. At least the sale will, it will probably be sold out and backordered by then of course.

Of interest to some others, the RS180s-8 midwoofers are also in the ad for $36. I'm going to try to stock up on a few of those for sure. That's almost as low as it was in all of the threads they use them in from years ago...

for nine bucks, that is crazy.

two of them side by side with a seos 12 on top would seem to be a nice medium sensivity build, but again, the pricepoint seems crazy.

Is it just me or does the product description seem oddly suggestive?

+1 for the f20 suggestion. full plans are available, just perform a search.

otherwise, a slot ported enclosure that is 5-6 cubic feet and tuned to 20hz is probably the next best plan. i'm pretty sure that your amp has some sort of high pass filter around 20hz, so tuning any lower really won't do much. i'm not familiar with any "plans" for such a sub, but it would be trivial to design and you could customize the dimensions based on what you think works/looks best. if you need some help with the design, just ask.

Too big for the WAF. Plus, I have two cats that would get lost in that port. Thanks for the link though. I really need something that could be disguised as an end table. Even if it's not this driver, something in this price range would be nice.

It's a 20+ year old 8" Klipsch sub with 65 watts, so I'm guessing a 15" sub with 500 watts would be more gooder.

attached is what jay is saying, but using pictures.

green line is my best guess at what you have now. a small 8" with 100 watts.

red line is the dvc 15" in 3 cubic feet, sealed, 500 watts.

white line is the dvc 15" in 6 cubic feet, ported, tuned to 20hz 500 watts.

edit: the light blue line at the top is a very rough approximation of the f20 output with 500 watts. you can see why it was suggested earlier.

all with a 2nd order high pass filter at 20hz (your plate amp probably has something like that built in).

depending on how large the room is, you will get some boost below about 25-30hz or so.

so the small sealed 15" with 500 watts is 'more gooder', but if you can figure out a way to make a larger ported enclosure blend into your room, it is 'more more gooder' and if you can handle the shear size of the f20 horn sub, it is 'more more more gooder'. these are the tradeoffs.

Wow man, thanks for figuring all of that up. That graph does help a lot. 6 cu.ft. would be no problem, but that 60 inch long box won't happen.
My amp does have high pass filter, but I've found this .pdf detailing how to mod it: http://www.parts-express.com/pdf/300-752.pdf Once I figure out what that means I will swap them out.

Stupid question for today: If everything is tuned to 20Hz and a there's a 16Hz tone in a movie what happens?

no problem.

every system has tradeoffs. for each person one design may be better or worse.

if you cook up a rough set of dimensions for your cab based on what you think looks good or works in your setup, allowing for some extra area for the port, someone or i can help you narrow down the specifics of the port dimensions.

it will be reduced by a few decibels and the content much below that will kind of fade away fairly quickly. i would tune a ported enclosure to around 16hz, but that actually produces a worse model when running a 20hz high pass filter than tuning at 20hz. without knowing the specific eq/high pass of any given amp, it isn't really possible to optimize.

by the way, the 15" dvc, in the ported cab, with 500 watts and a 20hz highpass, will be a tremendous bang-for-the-buck sub.

I just ordered the sub. Would 22"T x 22"W x 28"L work? That gives me ~6.4 cuft. I'll try to get some room measurements and pictures tonight if that would help?

Yup! Plan on staying sealed or you going with a vented design?

I own a Adire Tempest (nearly identical to the DVC15) in a 7cuft box tuned to 15.4hz. It's awesome.

If you want to go ported pick up some 4" ABS/PVC and run two 23" long ports, it will get you right around 20hz tune. Not sure what you're running for power, but everything looks good with 300 watts.

You'll still be fine. Just dont plan on running full power continuously, the drivers only rated for 350 watts. You might encounter slight port noise at full blast, but it shouldn't be a deal breaker.

I won't ever have it full power. I'm replacing an old POS 8" sub that rattles and distorts at any big action sequence. I just want to cover anything that comes up without it taking a crap and pulling my attention from the movie. I had to turn the volume down to a whisper during the War of the Worlds sequence just to keep the sub from coming apart.

Do I need the rounded end pieces for the port or will straight pvc pipe work? Also, should the ports and sub face the room or the wall?

I'll post pics of the room and dimensions in a few hours.

If you dont have one already pick up a roundover bit. Place the round over on the baffle side of the port, and you can also cut out small pieces of wood to attach to the inside end of the port and put roundovers there too. You can face the driver and ports however you like, just give a 4" port at least 4" of clearance from boundaries, and the woofer enough clearance to freely operate.

The port kits only come in 17" length, and who knows how well those flares match up with ABS or PVC found at lowes/HD?

I have 6 sitting in my garage from the last time they went on sale lol I keep telling myself I don't need a paradigm sub 2 clone but it may happen sooner than later
For $129, I don't think there is a whole lot better out there.

Also the driver is rated 350 watts RMS per coil, 600 total as per parts express's site.

I didn't even think to just use a round over bit. I have a cabinet shop next door to my business, so I have access to all kinds of good stuff. They actually helped build the entertainment center in the pics here. We are going to build the sub to match. The room is 16x20 with 8ft ceilings.

is this from the sides of the box or just the end of the port? Also, should I do a small plate with a roundover inside the box on the other end of the port?
