need help please- setting up a big htpc and more

Thread Starter
Hi everyone,

I need some help in which is the best way to set up a htpc and home network.
I have the following items:

1. led 42" TV
2. Sony PS3
3. receiver and speakers
4. desktop PC with win7 pro
5. mac mini
6. Sony Vaio laptop
7. wireless router

I don't know how to start, what should I connect directly to the TV?
What software should I use?
The desktop will held the movies and music.

Can anyone help me how to start with all that mess?
Thank You

Here you go .... Read through through the free stuff to get your "wow" factor on and then get the paid version . Read for about a week . Ya , about a week and then come back for help if needed or better yet post up some firm build specs and let the forum take a look before you purchase if possible

Welcome to the addiction !

This is such broad and open-ended query that not many people will be motivated to answer this.
For instance;
What is your purpose/goal?
What is your definition of a 'big HTPC'?
What file types (DVDs/BDs/Music) do you wish to play?

start small with defined goals - easier for you and you'll have specific questions that will elicit better responses.
A couple of things:
1) running computers through AVRs can make things "interesting"-especially if you're just starting out. I'd make sure the computers work properly connected directly to your TV before routing them through your receiver (if it will function that way)
2) Build up one app at a time. Tough enough to troubleshoot anyway w/o having to deal with complexity and not knowing which app/connection might be causing the problem

As the others have said-this is really a hobby and you just have to dive in and read and experiment a bit. Frustrating at times? Heck yeah, but there's no substitute for personal experience. The learning curve can be steep, but you can't bypass it with a simple "I've got a bunch of stuff and want someone to tell me how to hook it up" post...

You didn't give us enough info. What kind of reciever do you have? Does it do HDMI switching? Ideally, you will not connect anything other than the receiver directly to the TV, and everything else should connect to and be managed by the receiver.

When you say "best way to set up a home network" what do you mean? Do you have a network today? Wired or wireless or both? Do you have internet access? If so, what kind, and don't you have a router as part of your internet service?

Are you talking about building a new dedicated htpc, or are you planning on using your existing desktop or laptop as an htpc?
