Old router as a gateway????

So I am trying to keep costs down to a minimum as I am experimenting going without cable. I do t want to invest too much in remotes etc, in case the wife wants to get cable back.

So currently I have a Roku, PS3, and PC In my office connected via HDMI to my TV in the living room.

My understanding is that all of these iPad apps will connect to the roku and pc, but what about the tv and PS3?

I want to try one of these out but weighing the option if just getting a Harmony 900 or a gateway.

I have a next gen extender and an old router. Can I configure the old router as a gateway? What about to the TV? I guess I would need Ethernet on the tv which I don't believe I have.

I had a Harmony 700 and it wouldn't play nice with the next gen.

Just weighing my options. Anyone in this boat? Also if the ps3 is connected to the same router as the pc and roku shouldnt I be able to control it?

A router is a gateway. If you are talking about using it as a A/P or Access Point, yes it can be used for that. You just have to connect a ethernet cable to the Lan port, turn off dhcp, and assign a static IP. So, if your current router is 192.168.1.1, you would assign a static IP to the old router turned a/p of 192.168.2.1.

Good deal. Going to tinker tonight. Just gotta figure out how to get the tv working if it Dosent have an Ethernet port.

You could use Ethernet over power. If the tv is wifi only, having the ap closur may help.

What if the tv only has hdmi, aux, etc but no Ethernet or wifi connectivity.......

And yes I know it's highly unlikely but just curious.

If you are using one of the devices you mentioned, to feed audio or video, then you are good to go.

Thanks. The major concern is being able to change inputs and to change all devices with a macro.

If your tv has no ethernet or wireless connection, there is no way to control it directly via IP. I think the sort of gateway you are thinking about is an IP-to-IR gateway. It would be quite an engineering feat to make one of those from a router. It would be better to simply buy a Global Cache gateway.

You can get an RF Xsight Touch and Nevo RF base for about $100, which is far less than a Global Cache based system or Harmony 900. It's on par with a 700 but far more capable (RF, touch-screen, 18 devices, unlimited macros, etc.).

Yep leaning that way now. I had a 700 with the next gen and could never get it to work.
