To get HD audio, you need HD video, too.

Audio and video data share the same wires in an HDMI cable. HDMI audio is sent during the "vertical retrace interval" and uses the same transmission bitrate as the video. This means that for HD audio to be transmitted, the player also has to be sending high resolution video. When Standard Definition video is being sent, the bitrate is too low for the HD audio to fit into the limited time available to send it.

Oops, thanks for the tip. I should have thought about it.
I cannot do it atm, but gonna check soon the sound on that BR disk.

Anyway, I'm sad to learn (too late, as I cannot return/exchange them anymore) that my 5.0 Monitor Audio BX2/BXC/BXFX is not happily paired with Denon 2113 receiver (neither with Yamaha 673, which I have already returned and opted for Denon, in search of a less bright/metalic sounding receiver).
The sound is most of the times muffled, barrel-like. The voices dont sound natural at all. The overall sound is less bright/metallic as compaired with Yamaha receiver pairing, but sometimes the metal-like, unnatural/barrel-like sounding of high and middle frequencies is perceivable with this one too.
Looks like it's due primarily to Monitor Audio specific. Unfortunatelly I didnt get a chance to listen to them prior to buying.

I wonder if things will improve after adding a sub and running again Audissey (or maybe if I'll do a bi-amping of front speakers too)

Biamping will make no audible difference. Having better quality low frequency audio, as provided by a good subwoofer, is its own reward. It's unlikely to make a noticeable difference in the higher frequencies, though.

If you haven't already done so, please read the Audyssey FAQ at http://www.avsforum.com/t/795421/official-audyssey-thread-faq-in-post-1/51750#post_21782993 It includes recommendations which will improve the quality of the calibration process. The instructions provided by the equipment manufacturers are greatly simplified.

Height (inches) 6.57

My console (nice piece of furniture, wife issue) has 16.5 inches of usable (depth) terrain (from back wall to where door will close). I'm not sure what the listed dimensions show (the actual casing versus from power cable to tip of knobs, etc.) and I need this piece to fit such that the doors close. I am not averse to cutting a slot in the back of the console to accommodate the receiver if I need to, but only want to do so if necessary. If anyone has easy access to measure I would sincerely appreciate it.

(If I cut the hole, I would worry about dust on the inputs, etc- is there a workaround or tips for this?)

Not advisable to put the AVR in a completely enclosed cabinet. Even if it does fit, and you are able to close the door, I would recommend that you take the back off the cab so the AVR can still breathe.

The way I read it was that he damaged it himself while moving.

This is an expensive piece of hardwood furniture, I could not take the back off. The back is one inch thick- the only way to do this is to cut a hole. Acceptable?

^^^^

How big of a hole??

As long as the AVR gets enough air to not overheat, sure.

How much room will you have above and to the sides of the receiver? Can you install a couple fans if need be?

If you download the manual they show the complete dimensions in a diagram, including front-to-back with all protrusions (volume knob, input jacks, etc.).

Remember though that you need a couple of inches for CABLES to plug in. 1.5" of clearance is going to be tight.

The best bet would be if you could cut a few holes for cables to pass through, and also a hole where a fan could exhaust hot air out the back.

I will say that I have had several Denon AVR's in the same enclosed cabinet for years and never had any heat issues. The console has doors which close complete in front and just a big slot in the back for cable management. So it's not guaranteed that you will have trouble.

You can see my cabinet in this photo (don't mind the extra speakers, I was testing a pair out at the time):

Thank you so much- I was considering HDMI "elbows" for the cable issue if I was just a bit tight. It sounds like holes is the answer though.
I'm using HDMI 1.3 cables, should I worry about using a 1.4v cable?

I'm not getting my caller ID to pass to the TV via my 2113 from my cable box. Is it possible to be a HDMI cable issue?

Cnet has a video review of this receiver and at the end it was stated that the Denon receivers has a better sound output, are they kidding how can this be????

I dont get your question. Ive owned 3 major brands and IMO Denon offers the best sound, at least to my ears. There are some folks that state amps dont color sound, or this is no difference, I do not agree with that for one second.

Sound quality from Denon on the other hand the reviewer stated that you can get a receiver of another brand with more bells & whistle for less money.

How can the sound quality improve, vs let say a Onkyo??? that's my question heck my speakers will be the same.
Little bit off topic but if in the wrong section (mod please this post if you can) after spending some time setting up my new 2113 and speakers I dug out an old Queen DVD that has DTS 24/96 sound track and wow, very pleased with how this Denon handles it.

My question is there a site or list that tells me other 24/96 recordings I can buy?

Is it also correct the 2113 can not do 24/192 ?

Nope, not likely related to the cable, rather simply with the signal from the cable box. Connect cable box HDMI directly to the TV with optical from the box to the AVR.

Using Onkyo as an example, the same level Onkyo only uses the lowest version of Audyssey 2EQ which not only has from 2x (MultEQ) to 16x (MultEQ XT) fewer speaker EQ control points, but also cannot EQ the subwoofer as both MultEQ and MultEQ XT can.

Although the 2113 can "do it", Audyssey MultEQ and MultEQ XT cannot be enabled when doing so.

First thanks for the reply but what does that mean about the Audyssey items mentioned are you saying because the Denon has a better Audssey then let say the Onkyo it would sound better? now lets take off the Audyssey then what??? just learning here or trying.

jdsmoothie: I connected an audio optical cable from the TV to the AVR and it is still automatically going to "TV Audio" source. It seems to not do this when I have it set to "HDMI Control Off", but, isn't HDMI control good?
Out of curiosity what video upsacling processor is used in the 2113 series?

Considering an upgrade later this year, I dont want to get a full vp, for the limited upscaling i use on some content, but it would be nice to kill two birds with one stone with an avr.

Hopefully denons still not using abt chips in my 3311.
^^
Beginning with the XX12 models, the D+M models now use Analag Devices video chips.

Correct. The AVR will continue to switch to "TV audio" as long as either the HDMI-CEC feature is enabled on the TV or HDMI Control is enabled on the AVR.

Was prompted to download a firmware update on my 2113ci this morning. 26 min update. Anyone know what it's for?
I haven't yet purchased a xx13 model (looking at pulling the trigger on the 2313 or 3313) and haven't really found an answer to one question. I will have the receiver in a media closet, with the main room being the home theater room, and the second zone / room will be a workout room. i am looking at having the receiver output video/sound to the zone 2 from the connected htpc.

My question is with regards to the projector in zone 1 being 1080 p / 3d while the second zone (work out room) is 720 p not 3d. i do not intend to have both rooms simultaneously playing content, but have read that the receiver reverts to the lowest spec output device (workout tv). If both devices (tv and projector) are never concurrently used, will the receiver be able to switch back and forth seamlessly or will there be an issue with settings for the displays to not work in their native resolutions. Source will be the htpc for both rooms.

I recently bought Denon 1913 which is an upgrade from my pioneer vsx-1022-K

I have a 5.1 klipsch RF speakers

after calibrating with the mic, I noticed few things

1. surround sound is very bright (or loud) compared to my pioneer
2. main speakers (LCR) sound is very low compared

am I missing something here; I felt my pioneer was sounding better (

Hi,

I'm curious and having a question. I'm interested in buying the Denon AVR2313. I also want to use airplay but when i send a stream to the receiver from my ipad / iphone will it come out of standby?

Yes, It will come out of standby.

Thanks for answering!

That's weird just phoned a shop were they sell the AVR 2313 and the say you have to power it on via the remote or the app before you can play a stream via airplay.

I am curious about this too. I did the update this morning and when it restarted there was no sound coming from the l+r surrounds.
I did not have time to play around with it because i had to go to work.

I have the 2113ci and when I use airplay from my iphone it comes out of standby mode. When I turn off airplay it goes back into standby mode. I don't think it would be
different on the 2313.

They are wrong. There is a network standby setting that allows the receiver to be accessed when it is in standby.

Describe your calibration procedure - how many mic locations, did you use a tripod, was the room as quiet as you could get it, etc. Do you have Dynamic Volume turned on (most like leaving this off)? Do you have Dynamic EQ turned on (most like leaving this on)?

FWIW, with my 2113 I noticed the same thing with the surrounds seeming too loud after Audyssey - I turn them down 4db and it sounds better to my ears.
