The **OFFICIAL** Denon AVR-XX13 Model Owner's Thread & FAQ - Page 213

Hi all,

After 10 months of sporadic troubleshooting efforts, I've decided that I need to send my 2113 to Denon for repairs. I've done every single firmware update, every single reset several times, testing several different sources, cables, TV's and with all of them, the screen will go black within 4-5 minutes of starting to watch either a blu-ray or dvd - like clockwork. Although it appears to be an HDCP issue, it's curious that this happens with non HDCP encypted material like a DVD.

With that said, I've given up. Can someone run me through the process of what happens when you send your receiver in for service? I purchased the unit about 11 months ago, so it's still within the 3-year warranty. Do I just pay the shipping or am I responsible for any repairs too? Thanks.

see my experience in the 3311 thread; 13 days from shipping until returned to me; had to pay UPS about $36, Denon covered the repair...ymmv wink.gif

Finally got my new 70'' tv, 1913, and pioneer sound system going.

Everything has exceeded my expectations except for a few airplay issues and the missing denon app.

When I setup airplay on the denon app on my iphone I can not figure out how to save the "denon" I am connecting to. Each time I open the app I have to refind and connect to the receiver. Am I missing something or is this the way it functions?

Next, I can not find the Denon app for the iPad? Is the app not available for the iPad???

I was really worried about handshake issues but everything seems fine over 2 days of testing. Still have yet to go through audyssey setup since I have not connected/wired my bookshelves yet, but for a 3.1 system so far its great.

Check Denon's website for any authorized repair facilities in your local area that you can use which will save on your shipping costs. Denon will pay the repair and return shipping costs. Ensure you you have your original dated receipt and ideally pack up the unit in it's original box if you are shipping it.

note: there are not any repair facilities near me; that's why I sent mine to New Jersey; read good things about them...

USB Firmware Updates – North American Denon AVR units only

If you are having difficulty loading the latest firmware to your XX13 networking AVR, please PM me with your model number after reading and agreeing with the disclaimer noted below and I will provide the update file.

Disclaimer:
This firmware is for use with North American Denon AVR units only. Feel free to use it under the condition that it not be forwarded to other individuals and is for your personal use only. It is provided with the understanding that you will “use it at your own risk” and it comes without any implied warranty from D&M. You agree that D&M will not be held responsible for any damages to your unit resulting from the inappropriate use of this firmware or from updating the unit in an improper way. As this update being provided to you is not supported by D&M, should you have any installation issues, please do not call Denon customer service for support as they will be unable to assist you.

After downloading and unzipping the provided .zip file, you will find a “firmwares” folder and a Word document which provides instructions on how to install the firmware update. The “firmwares” folder must be moved to an “empty” FAT16/FAT32 formatted 2GB (or larger) USB memory stick. Note that should you have any issues with the update, you may have to reset the unit’s microprocessor after doing the update so prior to installing the update, be sure to copy the unit’s on board configuration file to a PC using the Web Control SAVE feature (1713 and higher models only).

Also review the following post on the SAVE/LOAD procedure ....

Is there anyway to adjust the onscreen colors to make them similar to the marantz onscreen. I.e can you load Marantz firmware or edit the firmware of the 3313 to offer unique features ?
Also related to the 3313 - does the discrete HDMI output for zone two offer onscreen volume control and adjustments to the main unit ?
Thread Starter
No to both. The GUI is what it is, and the Zone 2 HDMI is simply a matrix switch, the signal is totally unprocessed.

Hey everyone,

I just purchased an AVR-1913 and received it in the mail today and I must say I'm pleased with it. I own the Pioneer FS51, C21, and BS21, and have purchased a BIC F12. I was however considering getting a set of FS52's to replace the BS21's. Would that be a worthwhile venture and would this receiver be able to drive them safely? I think this is the best place to ask.

Thanks,
Steve

As a result, the receiver needs plenty of ventilation: several inches all around the receiver and/or a fan to suck the hot air out.

OK- so the cabinet is at least 3'x3'x3', and there are only 2 receivers and one 6 channel speaker switch in there. One door is always open when the units are on. So there is not much heat build up. In addition, there was at least 6" above this unit.

Now that being said, last night I plugged it back in and it works just fine. I did re-arrange the cabinet layout and now placed this unit on the bottom so now it has about 12" above it and plenty of clearance on the sides, where before it was towards the top of the cabinet. I did notice that when it wasn't powering up, the top of the unit was very warm- warmer than I ever felt. Last night after it was on for a few hours, the top was cool to the touch.

any thoughts on what would have caused the excessive heat? Should I send it to be checked out?
My understanding is that the video circuits in most of the xx13 models generate a surprising amount of heat whenever the receiver is on, even when the video circuits are not in use. If it's near the top of an enclosed space with an opening only on one side, there's less space for the hot air to get out. You might want to consider putting a cheap thermometer in near the top just to see how warm the upper equipment gets.

Greetings all and thanks for all the detailed info in this thread and all over AVS.

I'm thinking of getting a Denon 1713 and have two related questions on its A/V switching that I couldn't clearly figure out from the manual.

1) Can you attach a different audio input (digital or analog) to an HDMI video source? I have a laptop next to my TV/audio setup that I sometimes use as a video source, like for something that's webcast only, something off of youtube, whatever. Laptop does not have HDMI out, but it does has a DVI output that converts via appropriate cable to HDMI video -- WITHOUT audio. I can get audio separately via TOS or analog.

What I would love to do is run the laptop HDMI vid into the 1713, but have that HDMI input use the audio from either the optical-in or an RCA analog-in instead. Is that possible?

2) More generally, can the 1713 pass thru video while playing a different audio source? The use case here is sometimes we'll have a video source on the TV but don't care about the associated audio and want to be listening to a music source or radio. For example, we're listening to music and want to pull up the cable TV guide to see what's on later or program something, or we want to leave a sports channel on to monitor a game but mostly are listening to a radio program, or sometimes even with a major live news event we'll have a network feed on the TV while listening to NPR radio for commercial-free commentary (and less annoying anchors than the CNN crew... smile.gif

My Onkyo TX-503 handled this well back in my analog video days: if you switch to a video input, then switch to an audio-only source like the tuner or an digital/analog-in, the receiver switches the audio to that source but continues to feed the same video out. Today, it's now a mess of wires with everything having HDMI connects to the TV and audio connects to the TX503 and I'm hoping to reduce that and make my switching -- more to the point, my wife's switching -- a one-stop process.

These are not huge issues and wouldn't necessarily turn me away from the 1713, though if the competing Yamaha or Onkyo can deal with them that might make me give them another look.

Thanks!

My unit is a refurbished AVR-1913. When I first turned it on, I set it up, calibrated it and watched a movie (Netflix, from my Apple TV). It was fine, I was happy. When I turned it back on, I got no video (just the occasional flash). When this first happened, I went through the whole HDMI HDCP reset thing and it worked fine; until I turned it off and on again. I flailed around for a bit, called tech support a few times, then brought it in to Panurgey (Denon's repair place).
They found nothing wrong with it.
When I brought it back, I still had the same problem, but I noticed that I could reliably bring it back by unplugging the tv (only the power for the tv - no other cables) for a few minutes. After some more experimenting, I found that I could also bring it back to life by unplugging the HDMI cable from the tv and plugging it back into a different HDMI port on the tv. This tv is a few years old (sony kdl46v5100) and what I suspect is happening is that while the tv is in standby mode, it retains some of the hdmi data in the channel, and this screws up the handshaking when the receiver and tv get turned back on. Unplugging the tv for a minute or two allows the data to dissipate.

Is the receiver at fault here? (or is it my tv?)
Will an HDMI switch placed between the receiver and the tv help at all?
Anything else?

First of all, unplugging the tv was not a reliable way to bring it back. Only a complete HDMI HDCP reset would do that. One of the most frustrating things about this experience is how I could not duplicate outcomes. Sometimes something would work, then nothing. In any case I decided to read up on my tv and I discovered there were firmware updates available (I had the one that came with the tv about 5 years ago). The updates professed to address certain unspecified HDMI issues. The update process (by USB) was pretty straightforward. Unfortunately, when I hooked up the Denon (after a full reset, including microprocessor) I got nothing but a screen full of static. Nothing I did could get it to work (mind you, the tv works fine otherwise). I am returning the unit (nearing the end of my thirty days).

I suppose I could forgo the Video part of the AVR, But if I wanted an Audio Receiver, I would have bought one. One of the reasons I bought this was because I needed an HDMI switch and I figured this could meet that need and give me great sound, but if I need to buy both, it doesn't make sense. One thing that puzzles me is that I know that some people have been successful in using this combination of tv / receiver, so it is not just that combination that is at fault. I suspect that either there is something wrong with the unit that the repair place does not detect or it actually works with one of the intermediate firmware updates for the tv.

Damn. I wanted this to work.

That's why I moved it to the bottom of the cabinet as hot air rises.

Honestly, after hearing your description, I highly doubt heat was the issue.

Yes, this is easy to accomplish. All you need to do is ensure that the audio input is coordinated with the same name as the HDMI input. So, for example, if you plug the analog audio from the laptop into the "DVD" analog inputs, the video from the laptop must also go through the "DVD" input for HDMI. Then, for that input, you set the "Input Mode" setting to ANALOG and it will force the analog audio stream (otherwise the receiver will think the audio is coming in over HDMI).

Unfortunately this part has become a lot more difficult in the HDMI age. For a long time Denons have had a "Video Select" setting that you could use to mix a different video source with whatever audio source you used, like on your old Onkyo. However, the issue is that this method does NOT work with any HDMI signals. You can't mix two different sources (using the audio from one source with the video from another) if either uses HDMI.

Since it sounds like the primary use case for this would be to watch TV while listening to a different audio source, I would suggest running a video connection from your cable box direct to the TV, and a separate audio connection to the AVR, which dissociates the TV video from the AVR switching. Then you can watch the cable feed on the TV and pick whatever audio source you want on the AVR.

There is no Denon Airplay app. Are you talking about the Denon Remote app? It is only an iPhone app, there is no iPad native version.

Then would you suggest that I send this back to Denon for service?

Not necessarily, it could have been a temporary glitch. Unless the problem is reproducible Denon service is just going to hold it for a few days and send it back to you and say "shucks, we couldn't find anything wrong!"

When you have some time to reload the settings (using the SAVE/LOAD feature) I would give it a complete microprocessor reset, just to clear up any potential software issues. If it doesn't happen again, I wouldn't worry about it.

Great. Analog only, though? I'd much rather use the Denon's DACs than my laptop's, but that's workable.

Argh. What happens to the video output on "tuner" -- blank screen?

Yeah, that's what we do now -- and unfortunately the #1 priority of this upgrade would be to simplify and consolidate our a/v switching. If operations are same as now, I'll have to explain why we're spending money on something new.

What I might do instead is keep the video switching in the AVR and just give up mixed video/audio mode. Seriously listening/watching separately is rare for us, like on election night we listened to NPR coverage when they had some interesting commentary but left the TV on to watch updates go by, some New Year's recently we watched the Times Sq ball drop while leaving on the music we were playing, etc. Once or twice a year. Much more common is turning on the TV briefly to see if something is on, and it's nice to be able to do that without giving up whatever background music / radio we have on. Not the end of the world if that changes.

Is this pretty much the way it works now, or are there other AVRs that let you switch video/audio independently?

No, same concept with digital. For example, if you use the optical input you would assign it to the same name that the HDMI video is plugged into. Only difference is you set input mode to DIGITAL which forces audio from the digital connection (overriding the expectation for HDMI audio).
Quote:

Yeah, not a blank screen as there will be on-screen info on the radio station or whatever, but the only way to mix that with a video source would be if you had a composite analog video connection (which of course would be SD only).

Gotcha, but it would just be that one source (TV / cable box). One option, if your box can handle multiple video outputs (e.g. HDMI and component video) would be to run the HDMI to the receiver and then also run the component video to the TV for the occasional "mix" session.

In fact, this is basically what I do with my system. I want to be able to be enjoying various sources (radio, bluray, Pandora, etc.) and be able to temporarily view the DVR video so I can check on the program guide, set up recordings, etc. I split the HDMI from my DVR (DirecTV) so it would go both to the Denon and directly to a second input on my TV.

During normal operations, my TV is on the main HDMI input, getting its signal from the Denon. Whenever I want to see the DirecTV video, I just press a button on my custom remote to switch the TV to its second input and poof, I'm good to go. It works very well for what I'm doing.

Good luck.

I just allowed my 3313CI to do the firmware update, and it completed successfully. It took it a little over an hour though, as I think it failed on the first attempt. After it was "GUI Update" for about 30 minutes, it switched off and back on and then displayed "Update Retry, Please wait...", and then did the update again.

The second time the update completed and all appears to be working well.

I see this update fixes the problem where Pandora would at times display Internet Radio rather than Pandora. It didn't happen very often for me, so it will be a while before I can see that it is corrected. I'm glad they addressed it though.

Just wanted to post another success story here!

Thanks for all the help!

Great! Please report back when you have confirmed the Pandora fix has resolved the issue. Thanks. smile.gif

I guess I should have read more threads -- apparently this year's equivalent models (E400/E300) WILL include the ability to set video source and audio source independently (and some improvement on input assignment capabilities?):

http://www.avsforum.com/t/1461825/new-denon-avrs-press-release/30

That'd be a nice improvement. There are a couple of small minuses like at the E300 level you lose the ability to web-based remote control of the AVR (more important to me than than iOS/Android ability) and neither E300/E400 has the ability to save settings as I guess then 1713/1913 can do.

But mostly since the new ones are still full price, it means not having a new toy to play with in the next week or two...
Just hooked up a Mac mini. Immediately getting hdmi handshake issues. I had bought a mono price hdmi to swap out to address noise coming from the hdmi board on my Panasonic plasma. It only got worse. Maybe the expensive cables have a purpose? Anyway looking for any of you who have integrated Mac minis into your HT setup. It is mainly for hosting apple lossless audio files and obviously serving as a computer. I could go hdmi from Mac mini to the tv then optical return to my 3313? I don't want to do anything to sacrifice sound quality.
