HDMI audio/video seperator

Thread Starter
I'm looking at replacing my broken lcd tv with a projector, but none in my price range have digital audio out. The projector I most likely will buy (refurbished Vivitek D853W) only has a 3.5mm audio output, which would degrade the 5.1 digital signal going to my 1000 watt home theater. I'd go to the home theater receiver first, but it has no inputs except one rca audio, one optical, and one digital coaxial.

So, what I'm looking for is something that is fairly cheap and can take hdmi input and send out hdmi video and the audio out digitally (I already have an hdmi auto switch, so it only needs one input). I've been having trouble searching for one though - I keep getting splitters with multiple hdmi outputs and such. Does anyone have a link to one or have a suggestion on how to phrase a search for it that will come up with what I need? Thanks.

EDIT: I also was looking into an hdmi splitter so I could hook everything up to the projector and a small tv. So it would be good if I could find something that had 2 hdmi out as well...

More like obliterate the 5.1 if its like most video projectors. I don't know of any that have digital or 5.1 analog outputs.

Must be a legacy piece which may leave you with some lip synch problems, even if we get you some HDMI audio connectivity for it.

By audio out digitally you mean coax or optical, right?

I find that eBay is sometimes the best place to find little gadgets like this:

- just one of many, I have no personal experience with this particular product but it looks right...

I think you are asking for trouble cascading three HDMI devices this way. HDMI has issues sometimes even when you don't do that. Adding another device between your switch and the projector may create a bunch of new problems for you that you don't have today.

Just bite the bullet and get a modern AVR to replace the one you have.

If you are going to buy the gadget regardless, buy it locally so that you can return it if it creates problems.
