GIGABYTE Silent Cell toasted by lightning

Please excuse me if I didn't find the right thread to get my answer.
My GIGABYTE GV-N96TSL-1GI Silent Cell w/ HD audio output got fried by lightning this weekend.
I loved having true HD audio support coming out of my computer into the HT receiver. To my dismay I see that this model has been discontinued.
I am a bit overwhelmed by all the threads here and I don't know which direction to go to get advice on a similar video card to replace that one that just got toasted.
Any help would be much appreciated.

What motherboard will it go in? (BTW: How did only the GPU get fried?)

What do you do with the PC? (HTPC? Games? etc.)

Any modern GPU will do HD audio over HDMI.

Any modern card will have FAR superior sound over HDMI, your old card only did SPDIF over HDMI, which is not HD audio. Are you gaming at all? If not an AMD 6450 will work great.

Surge protector or Back-UPS to prevent future incidents?

Second to surge protector. And since that Vid card (9600GT) doesnt have an audio chip on it, only SPDIF pass-through, chances are the motherboard's onboard sound is fried.
