I'm not coming from an LCD, but I do agree with you in regards to LCD w/ 120 Hz refresh rates. I've never been a fan of it because I think it makes whatever you watch look cheap.

My old TV was a LG 720p plasma. I set up both TV's and watched Tron Legacy on my PS3 (it is set to output 24fps). The opening sequence has vertical lines traveling left to right, which show the motion blur easily. The blur was about the same on both TV's.

This is my first 1080p plasma, so I assumed the blur would not be as noticeable when compared to my old TV. Maybe the blur is normal. It's most definitely not a deal breaker for me, I was just thinking there would be a setting that could improve it a bit.

At the end of the day, for what I paid this is an awesome TV.

I have had the same issue since i got the tv. Surely we cant be the only two? Finally decided to get rid of this set come the end of the month and go with another brand.

I too have noticed motion blur, but when watching sports. I never noticed this at all in my brief time with the Panny P50U50, but this more noticeable which is odd. One of the benefits of a plasma is that it's supposed to be great for fast motion. I absolutely love this TV but this particular issue has me rethinking keeping it. Might have to consider looking at the LG plasmas. No one else is experiencing this same issue?
ive read mutliple instances of motion blur on the 530. decided to go with the 550 myself. i assumed the same thing being a current plasma owner....motion blur shouldnt be an issue. i saw it with my own eyes at a bb store as well. still a brilliant looking TV, just not for what ill be using it for.
The motion blur is real, it is not your mind playing tricks on you. I had 3 Panasonic Plasma TV's prior to this. I have never had the motion blur issue prior to this. It is not terrible, just more annoying than anything especially since that is one of the primary reasons we buy Plasma TV's. I have heard it can be fixed through firmware upgrade. I don't mind doing firmware upgrades on smaller devices but the risk of bricking the TV is pretty scary. If you read the fine print you are doing this at your own risk so in other words you mess up its your fault. This is my first Samsung Plasma. It is not comparable to the image quality of the Panasonic's but its not that far off. The only reason I purchased it was because I have been a long time Panasonic advocate. I have purchased everything from them and the first time I had an issue with one of my Plasmas which was less than a month out of warranty they quickly turned their back on me, and I turned my back on them. So here I am with 3 days left to exchange the 530. I am tempted to go to the 550 simply because BB has it on sale for the same price as what I paid for the 530 so it would be an even exchange but I am afraid that it might have that same issue. Suggestions welcome.

I have been looking at the 530 but still on the side line with all these motion blur issue being mentioned. Can you post your fw version#? From what I read, folks with the newest ver 118 don't seem to experience motion blur on the 530. How bad is the motion blur?? enough to ruin a football game?

According to televisioninfo.com, the 550 is a better with no motion blur issue is they tested the 530.

http://www.televisioninfo.com/content/Samsung-PN51E550D1-3D-Smart-Plasma-HDTV-Review.htm

Just my 2 cents, I would exchange it for the 550 since you said it is an even exchange since the 550 is on sale. You get the 3d and SMART tv for the same price.

Just got a Samsung PN51e535, got it set up and working great. Used calibration settings I found on AVS Forum and looks greta.
One question about picture size for non HD Channels, anyway to get images full screen without the "wings" on SD channels?
^^^^
do you mean the black/gray bars on the side while watching 4:3 content?

if so, hit "p.size" on the remote until you get to "wide fit," IIRC.
I ended up exchanging the 530 for the 550 and I could tell the difference right away. It has less white noise than the 530 did and there are no issues with ghosting to speak of. The only thing I dislike is the crushed blacks. I am hoping this gets better as I break it in. I am very pleased with this set even though the day I brought it home the Samsung Smart Hub was not working. That has since been resolved and I am able to use the apps now. In my honest opinion it is the best picture I have purchased under $800 costing me $699+ tax which is what I had purchased the 530 for. Also on a quick note I did end up buying the Best Buy extended warranty. Based on my previous experience and the issues many speak of in these forums its clear that the quality of the parts going into the newer Plasma TV's are not nearly as good as they used to be hence the price point. I would recommend you do the same.

Bit of an update:
Still using CMonMan's settings.

I ran a proper test pattern display feed through (a better source than my 360) the service menu and executed input calibration. The set calibrated itself to proper setting than what I got out of the box (factory defaults, were, of course - too high). Both WB and input level calibration were set correctly. Reset the panel, and readjusted to CMon's settings (regular menu).

Success! (Tested with a few source materials)

I just got this TV for our bedroom (Have the 60" LG 6500 down stairs in our living room).

I love it so far, used cmon's settings and am more then pleased. Picked it up at costco for a deal I couldn't pass up, that said, it may be too big for the bedroom.

Haven't noticed any motion blur issues, etc (watched the 2nd half of the SB on it).

For the price, I can't complain!
Last night I went over to help set up my in-laws new Sam 55" LED... gotta say I'm more impressed with the E530 than the ES6100. Deeper blacks, better motion (I dislike 120Hz or the 'fake 240Hz' they now claim), and colors looked more realistic and vibrant.

I still think this set is a great value for the money.
I just picked up a 51" model 535 at Costco. It cost me $714.43 ($599.99) with tax and the extended warranty. I have to say so far I am very impressed with the natural colors on this particular TV. We purchased this set for our bedroom.

We made the mistake a few weeks ago picking up what we thought was a great deal on a 46" Toshiba Edge Lit LED TV. It was impossible to properly calibrate the colors. It was very washed out. It suffered edge bleed really bad so there was no way we were keeping it. We should have known not to buy a Toshiba LCD/LED style TV. We owned an old CRT Toshiba that we loved, but Toshiba lost their mojo when the technology moved to LCD/LED/Plasma.

We went back to Costco to return the Toshiba and look for a replacement. Just so happened they had just started a promotion of $250 off the 51" 535 model. The deal was too good to pass up so we bought it and brought it hope tonight.

Right out of the box with the factory settings the picture is amazing and the colors are so vibrant. We have a Samsung 55" 630 series (120 Hz) LCD downstairs in the living room, and the colors on the new 535 plasma seem more rich and vibrant. The blacks are definitely deeper for sure. I am going to try the calibration settings that were posted earlier in this thread tomorrow.

I haven't had it long enough to know if it has any of the motion blur issues observed on the 530 series. I watched the end of Tron: Legacy in HD tonight and didn't observe any motion blur.

Before making the purchase I discussed it with a sales representative that works at one of the better A/V stores here in Austin that happens to be a member of the Texas Sports insider site I belong to. He basically said the 535 series is basically a dumbed down version of the 550 series. The 550 series has the smart features, 3D, and an additional HDMI input. He said I wouldn't be disappointed with this TV and he was correct.

I will follow-up once I have had more time for the TV to break in and have tried the calibration settings.
I wanted to follow-up on my previous post. This is my first plasma TV. Is there anything special I need to do to break the set in properly? In many of the previous post I saw information about breaking a TV in, IR, etc. What do I need to do to make sure my TV breaks in properly and that I avoid any IR? The TV we purchase has a few options under screen burn in protection, but I am unsure of how to use these features. Thanks in advance!
I would make sure you've at least got the pixel-shift enabled. Samsung claims no break-in period is needed, but better safe then sorry. Some people go so far as to watch color-slides for the first x-hours.... I would just make sure that the first 100-200 hours you be careful not to have static images.. i.e., don't play many video games that have a constant image like a map in the corner etc.. and try to limit watching anything with black bars on top/bottom or sides.. would also try not to watch channels that have a solid logo that stays on throughout the entire program. That's all I did, and have not had a problem. Also, check out my settings from earlier or at the very least turn down the brightness! For the price, I think this set is hard to beat, congrats on the purchase

My 50" 8 YO Vizio bit the dust on Tuesday...got this yesterday. Serached google and found this forum. Just want to say thanks for all the great advice! You guys are awesome...Printed out CMonMan's settings and going to try them tonight.
Thanks Again!!
The settings from CMonMan worked great!
If anyone is interested, the remote control code for the TV is 1087.

Thanks for the tips! I have enabled the pixel shift feature. I also have been periodically running the color slides. I made sure my wife and more importantly the kids know not to pause the TV for long periods of time. I also used your calibration settings and the picture is beautiful. The colors and very vivid and natural looking.

So far I haven't observed any of the motion blur others have observed on the 330 model. I have watched several fast moving movies with no issues.

I also switched from my current cable provider to Direct TV yesterday, and that change along seems to have also improved the HD quality on both my new plasma TV and my LCD. The picture and colors are much more vivid now. I wouldn't have expected such a noticeable difference since I have fiber to the home. I guess not having to share bandwidth with my neighbors and internet and having your own individual feed from the satellite.

I am really glad I made the decision to go with the 51" Samsung plasma TV.

I would use the settings posted earlier in the thread by CMonMan. They work well and provide a great picture.

Ok thanks
i got this tv about a week ago, and i noticed some odd things when playing original xbox on it, it's in 16x9 mode by default so i can still use pixel shift, using component cables for 480p, and theres this odd flickering of pixels in some areas, keep in mind this is only threw component cables that i have tried, i haven't tried component, and it doesn't do this on my hdmi devices. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjSJO8g08Rg it doesn't leave any odd things on the screen when gameplay is over and it doesnt really bother me, it also does it in 4x3 and the other picture sizes.

CMonMan: Is R Gain @ 11 correct? Doesn't it make the picture look cyan? thanks.

I have a 64e533, maybe it's just completely different

The settings I posted are for the PN51E530.. if you have a different model, I doubt it would use the same settings. Sorry
post #145 of 169
Hi guys,

I have had the PN51E530 for ~ 2 weeks now and been using CMonMan's 'Movie' settings. Very impressed by the picture, whether it's satellite tv or blu-ray. This is my first big screen tv ever; going from 26" crt to 50+" plasma is quite a jump.

Regarding sound: it's just fine for watching television, I put it on either 'Standard' or 'Clear Voice'. It's horrible for dvd / blu-ray dialogue. So I bought a refurbished sound bar which really helps separate the channels. Not quite a replacement for an htib or dedicated unit, but it'll do.

Firmware:
This is a confusing issue I have. I believe I have something like 1018 on the tv, but Samsung's website only lists 1013?
When I put the usb memory stick in, and selected upgrade, it asked me if I wanted to 'upgrade' from 1018 to 1013. I said no and removed the usb memory stick.

Any ideas how my tv has a higher firmware, than what Samsung even has on their website?

cheers,
Jason

You know if the 64e533 have a pentile screen?i think 533 is the Costco version of 530. The PDF posted in this thread does not say.

To my knowledge, only the 60" screens are pentile. You can check the specs on Samsung's website to be sure.

Has anyone decased this screen? I'm looking for the panel measurements rather than the case measurements.

No, but now I'm curious- why would one want to do that?

I'm building a Virtual Pinball machine and using this for the playfield, so I'll be pulling it out of it's casing to drop into the cabinet.
