you have the e530 or e550?
It's the E530.

Just an update - the blacks are much improved with the "Darkest" setting for the Black Tone. That's neat and all, but all that's disabled for PC mode so you can't have good blacks and good input lag.

Anyway, that's fine. With that "darkest" setting, it's pretty good, and I'll use that setting for non-gaming use. I could see why many of you would be happy with it. It's just a shame it's disabled for some modes. Life's a compromise, I guess. In case any of you are wondering, in terms of input lag, it's something like...

Regular picture modes = 45ms (unplayable for me)
"Game Mode" = 32ms (good for anything other than 2D platformers or fighting games)
"PC" Mode = 16ms (pretty much as good as it gets for a modern television)

Get used to running the B&W scroll bar over night
if you get any IR from long game sessions.
It has no time limit witch makes it very practical.
I've been using it a lot lately to get rid of a mild mid screen band.
Last night I had IR from a dvd menu when the player just sat
and the screen saver never kicked in over 40 min later.
The IR was gone is less than 10 min with the wiper.

Yeah, I'll be doing slides for 200 hours soon. I'm not too worried about IR after that point - I won't be doing marathon sessions. Most of the content will be 4:3 or 8:7 (SNES). I do all my other gaming on my Sony projector. Once you've used that, no TV will satisfy :-) This plasma is mostly going to be used for Netflix or Crackle.

You don't need the slides at all just no black bars for 200 hrs so the panel ages evenly.
unless you like over scan use 'Screen Fit'.
Nah, slides rule. I can get the 200 hours done in a couple of weeks by leaving them running all day - it would take me months to get it otherwise. Overscan? Overscan is the devil's work. 1:1 mapping and aspect ratio stretching are the only things that exist to me cool.gif

No one has any comment on the firmware issue? The newest firmware from the Samsung site is 1013.A and my television shipped with 1014. I don't want to overwrite a newer version - unless Samsung numbers go in reverse? biggrin.gif What's everyone else have?

what about Gamma at -1 or -2?
keep contrast as high as possible just before you lose any detail.
also:
Dynamic Contrast - off
Black Tone - Darkest
contrast at 90,and brightness at 53 gamma on 0,if i turn gamma to -1then i have to turn up the brightness to 60 and the black level is still the same as nrightness at 53,and the same if i put gamma at +1 then the brightness go down to 50,if i put it on darkest then the brightness must up to 60 same as when gamme is on -1 but still no change in the black level.

the black level you have is normal for the 51" & 43".
you would have get the 51" on the e6500 to take it to another level of blacks, etc.

yea was that i thought.iam going for a panny i think, cant stand grey blacks.well thats a shame becaus its a great tv,pic quality is very good, but they should at least have the black level at ok i think not at crappy grey black.

why did you buy the lower tier model in the first place...
it's a $750 TV and you expect inky blacks, what's up with that?
well when i did the resesearch they said it has ok blacks, but thats its not ok blacks,my mothers tv lcd has ok blacks.but anyway it for do for now.i dident expect any deep black or anything like that, but a ok level of black decent black mayby.
i put some led lights behind the tv and the blacks seems to be better then.now its decent blacks.the picture got better too.you cant realy see in this pictures but it was like night and day.the 1 pic thats how my blacks looked like, but now its 10 times better with light behind the tv:)

I had to swap out my TV because I found two stuck pixels. New one is better.

Sonyfan, you're wrong about the "Cell Brightness does nothing" comment. It certainly does - as you adjust the number, you'll see that it also fades the OSD as well, proving that it does truly control the panel brightness. Contrast settings don't do that. Also, you can hear the difference in buzzing as you drop Cell Brightness - it's very distinct.

Also, Sharpness = 0 isn't correct, either. Look at a 1:1 pixel mapped 1-pixel width text on the screen with an HTPC or PS3. Sharpness at 0 does actually make it blurry. I wouldn't crank it up very much, but 0 is definitely giving up something, unless you don't ever plan to read fine text on it. Not sure why you'd ever want such softness on a display device.

Yea if you want better blacks get the 50U54 at Costco for $599, or the 50U50 elsewhere for $649. More equivalent to a top tier Panasonic than the entry level Samsungs are to a to tier Samsung.

Hi.iam going to buy this next month.Panasonic TX-P55ST50
post #58 of 169
Hi all,

Glad I found this thread - I had been looking through the 550 thread for comments on this model.

I posted this on cnet hoping to help somebody out with calibration:
I have some basic picture settings, but I am not an ISF calibrator. I had a Sammy PN58B550, but it was destroyed and I replaced it with the PN60E530. I used the AVS709 calibration disc (AVCHD) played through a Panasonic DMP-220 blue-ray player to calibrate, along with the mp4 version of the same disc, a PC grayscale JPG, and ICAL TV calibration game played through an Xbox 360. I did not use a blue filter to test for saturation and hue, nor did I use a meter or calibration software to measure the results. I use these settings because I feel it gives me a great balance of white and black level detail, with reasonable color saturation and tint. In my opinion, the only way to get a better picture would be to hire a professional to calibrate.

That said, and keeping in mind that I watch TV in a very dim to completely dark room, here are the settings I use:

Cell light:20
Contrast:89
Brightness:44
Sharpness:0
Color:50
Tint: G50/R50
Black Tone: off
Dynamic Contrast: off
Gamma: 0
ColorSpace: auto
White Balance: 28, 26, 25, 25, 26, 26
Flesh tone: 0
Color tone: Warm 2
Size: screen fit
Digital Noise Reduction: 0ff
HDMI Black Level: see below
Film Mode: Off

HDMI black level will only allow for the toggle if you use the HDMI-DVI connection, and it receives an RGB signal from the Xbox or other gaming device connected. I have my set calibrated to display 16-235 when HDMI black level is set to low (use for watching movies), and 0-255 when set to normal (use for playing games). If you have an Xbox, set the reference level to standard.

Without the use of any devices or DVDs I was pretty close to what you posted.

20
90
50 - brighter room but 45 when watching movies at night, in dark
10
50/50

Everything else the same except White Balance - I'll try those settings and see if I like it.

Thanks!

Cool.
Later this week, I'll have a blue filter so I'll be able to test saturation and hue. I'll post the results when I have them.
