Need advice on seating distance

We are in our new home and are trying to plan out our A/V system. We will probably end up with a Panasonic Viera GT50. Our main seating is going to be 18 ft. from the display. Obviously we are limited to a 65in. display.

Is this going to seem way too small for that distance? We can't do a projector here either for what it's worth.

18Ft is a good long distance away. Would probably actually look pretty nice for SD DVDs and many So-Called "HD TV" programs - but you would not derive much benefit from Blu-rays or other reasonably high def material.

If the room is not overly bright - and/or if you can control the brightness levels - I might actually be tempted to look at a DLP set (seeing that a projector is not in the mix).

We have a couple of friends with large DLP screens - both 72", per memory - and while we prefer the overall PQ of a good plasma, there IS something to be said about Sheer Size, especially given a longer viewing distance.

Only other option I can think of - short of a Pan 85" panel! - is one of the 70" or 80" LCDs...

Move your seating area closer to the TV screen. 14 feet. Thats only 4 feet.

There's no right or wrong answer.

I have a 50" that I sometimes sit 20' away from and it's not awe inspiring, but I can enjoy what I'm watching. I can see the same things I can see from 10' away. Just smaller.

After re-evaluating the layout of the family room, we might be able to get to 15 feet. But, that is it.

We currently sit 14' away from a 50" and I do wish it was bigger.

Definately go with the biggest display that you can in the 70 inch and up category. In this case bigger is better than high quality. Maybe there is another room where you could sit closer to a higher quality TV.

Soon, I'm going to be sitting about 8 feet away from the 65 inch VT50. Wall mounted, surrounded by 6 Axiom Audio speakers (5 M22 + VP160 + EP350), mounted just above and below the TV. For me, I'll be in HD heaven.

If I was to leave the furniture along the wall, I'd be looking at about 15 feet of distance. Since I live alone, I can get away with other strange living room setups, so I just set a loveseat at the 8 foot distance and live with it. Perhaps you could do this on a temporary condition, for movie night perhaps.

Another idea: Can you move the TV closer to the sitting area?
