Official Canon HF M50 , 52 , 500 thread - Page 3

Well I finished reading the threads. Too bad it isn't followed today; I hope somebody joins in again. There are some good questions that could be worked on.
My WA lens is a must now that I've used a cheap one for a while I want a really good one. Is the Cannon lens going to be better than my cheap one? The telephoto is worthless but perhaps useful for macro. I need to experiment more. But I really like a wider lens; the cheap one I have works great.
More equipment that I got for this video project were hard drives. One is for the video off the SD cards and it is a TB at least. Another is 2 TB for digital editing and another is backup automatic for the MAC. I think that one is 500 GB.
I really like how I can download off SD cards onto my 1 TB HD without a PC like in a hotel room. That required a special cable as mentioned in the manual, a regular usb one won't work.

Would someone tell me if they have used an SD card that is greater than 32GB in this camera? Thanks.

Thank you for contacting Canon product support regarding your VIXIA HF M50.

Your camcorder is compatible with any capacity of SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards. The largest card currently commercially available is 128GB, which your camera will accept. Because your camera also takes high definition video, we would recommend you purchase a card that is at least Class 6 or higher. These cards are widely available at nearly any retailer that sells consumer electronics.

Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance with your HF M50. Thank you for choosing Canon.

Sincerely,

Hi. I'm interested in buying Canon Vixia HF M52 camcorder on behalf of a Church to record the proceedings there. We presently have a Sony non-HD camcorder installed on the ceiling for a better view and to be non-intrusive for the public on the floor. With camcorder's remote controller and a tripod head that has another remote controller of its own, we can record on/off on the camcorder and do PZT motions. We use the camcorder for live streaming and also for simulcast on TVs within the Church. We use the AV-out to connect to the computer and then simulcast to the TVs and/or stream live on web (via an application software and suitable graphics card). Sony camcorder has to be docked into a station for transferring the files to the computer and so from time to time we put up a ladder and remove the camcorder to transfer the files, delete them and place it back on the ceiling.

So, all we want to have is no human touch on the camcorder for all our operations as it would need a ladder to be put up against the wall. Here are the questions regarding Canon HF M 52 camcorder for the operations that we would do:

1. From what I read, we need to set the camcorder to playback mode to transfer files. So I guess using a button on the remote controller (hold for 2 minutes) we can toggle between the shooting mode and playback mode (Page-44 of the Manual, button-2, bullet-2). Is that right?
2. Also when we activate the playback mode, the USB port connected to computer will automatically make the camcorder's card to be seen as an external hard drive thereby enabling easy transfer and deletion of files. Is this correct?
3. We would like not to waste the power (electrical) when the camcorder is not needed. So the way we do now with our present camcorder (Sony) is: set the power button to ON always (it is a dial to be turned to a position in Sony camcorder) and control the ON/OFF of the camcorder by manually unplugging the camcorder adapter from the socket (source) in the wall which is accessible to us without any ladder. If Canon camcorder is powered on with its button pressed once, will it "remember" its power setting and get powered up when we unplug and then replug the adapter? That way we do not have to reach to the camcorder to manually press the power button on it in case it "forgets" its previous setting.

If all these criteria are met, this camera suits our needs perfectly and we would very much like to buy it. Please let us know if the set-up that I presented is workable for our needs with no human touch on camcorder required at all. Any advice given will be very helpful. Thanks.

Doesn't this camcorder have WiFi control and viewing?
The WiFi is only for upload or using with DLNA. It does not have remote viewing through the WiFi nor is able to be controlled with a smart phone etc.

For a remote the inexpensive JJC RM-D89 $13 works very nicely. Check amazon.

Wow the images are awesome once dialed in.

I would like to see someone with a G10/XA10 do a comprehensive side by side comparison with the HF M500/50/52.

The Canon will not turn on remotely like you have described. It needs to have the power button manually pushed.

For my Canon M50 I prefer to get this one from BHPhoto when availability happens :

I just got a M50 secondhand and love it!

However, mine didn't come with the Pixela software, including the Network Transfer software. The manual states I can't use the wifi features without that software installed. Does anyone know an alternative way to make the wireless to my PC work?

I got the WPS feature on my router to connect, but there's no prompt to transfer, or automatic transfer.

I called Canon, but they sent me to Pixima. Pixima said it would cost minimum $40, which is crazy since I really just want the utility driver. I could care less about the video editing software... rolleyes.gif

Is it used or refurbished?
If you bought it refurb from Canon, they have to include everything and if that's the case tell them it wasn't in the package.

It is, and I did. They gave me free $40 battery to compensate, but wouldn't budge on getting me the software. Said they didn't have any way to get it.
