My cable company doesn't offer a cable card or cable box. They just require a digital TV with a QAM tuner. I know TiVo won't work. I need to be able to record channel 5-1 and 101-2 for example. A DVD recorder would be ok.

Wow, no card or box? They are sending everything in clear QAM? What an anomaly. A funai DVD recorder will work but only in SD. Do you want to record in HD/5.1?
I know it is hard to believe in 2012. They tell me they will do something at the pole to scramble the channels when they start charging for them. They have been upgrading to digital/HD for a few years now. It is small operator in a rural area. Celina Cable/Overton County Cable in Tennessee.
