Denon AVR-1713 vs discounted Denon AVR-1912

Outside of the USA, the 1912 features the same more advanced Audyssey MultEQ XT as does the 1713 so no difference there.

1912 -
a. 7.1 or 5.1/Zone 2 (cannot have 7.1 in main zone w/2 extra speakers on the patio as there are no Zone 2 preouts to connect to external amp)
b. Cannot SAVE config file (to include Audyssey settings) to PC for easier loading after resetting the microprocessor (ie. must do AUTO SETUP again)
c. When Airplay is selected for Zone 2 audio, it must also be selected for the main zone (ie. cannot have independent source in main zone while Airplay is playing in Zone 2) Note: You can avoid this limitation by using the Apple TV instead of the on board Airplay feature.
d. GUI overlays 2D video only

1713 -
a. 5.1 w/Zone 2 preouts (ie. can add Zone 2 speakers with 2CH external amp)
b. Able to SAVE/LOAD config file to/from PC
c. Airplay can play independently to Zone 2 with another source in main zone
d. GUI overlays 2D and 3D video

If none of the above is a concern for you, then the 1912 would be the better choice.

Yes, they can both be controlled by iphone/iPad using the Denon remote app.

Also note, that with the AppleTV, there is no such limitation of having to play Airplay to both main and Zone 2. Additionally, the AppleTV can stream video which the on board Airplay application cannot do. You're much better served using the AppleTV for Airplay with either model.

The only other factor you might consider is re-sale value if you were to upgrade in the next 12 months - I'd rather buy last years model than a model two season old, so that would tend to put the Denon AVR-1713 as favourite for me

I just wanted to jump into this thread because I have a question regarding these 2 receivers. Would I be able to hook up 3 pairs of speakers that I have in the kitchen, dining room and deck. Each pair have their own independant volume control.

The 1912 only does 2 zones.

The 1713 is only a 5.1 receiver, so you'd need a seperate amp even for a second zone.

You're going to need to purchase some type of speaker selector if you want seperate volumes in 3 rooms.

thanks for the quick reply. Actually I was thinking of setting up my older receiver to run the house speakers. I guess the 1713 has zone 2 pre-out, meaning they are unpowered. So can I simply input them into an older receiver and run my 3 sets that way using the A and B settings. The 1912 has powered zone 2, so I wil not be able to run this into a seperate receiver. Am I somewhat making sense?

you can run 2 sets of speakers using A and B settings on your old receiver but I don't see how you can get different volumes in each room...

I have volume controls on the wall for each pair of speakers. 1 on the deck, 1 in the kitchen and 1 in the dining room. I have been running my 3 pairs using this receiver for some time and its been ok. I just dont put all 3 on at the same time and have never cranked the volume up so I figure it would be ok. I guess my question is... is there a difference between the zone 2 in the 1713 and the 1912.

None other that one needs external power and the other uses the receivers built in amps.

I feel as though, the 1713 pre-out may be the better choice as I already have an extra receiver to use as the amp. On a bit of a different note... would I be able to play music via Apple TV into my zone 2 or would I just use the included Airplay since I cannot use HDMI feeds into zone2.

How are you going to power 3 speakers from zone 2 when it only has two speaker terminals. You're asking questions I can't even visualize.

As long as you continue the practice of not having all 3 additional zones on at the same time, you could connect a multi zone impedance matching speaker selector to the Zone 2 speaker posts on the 1912, the limitation being that Airplay on the 1912 would also have to be selected in the main zone when playing to Zone 2. Using the 1713 would be much safer with the Zone 2 pre-outs going to your old receiver (as you are currently doing now) and there is no Airplay restriction (ie. Airplay can be independent to this old receiver with other audio selected in the main zone). Also note that whether using the speaker posts (1912) or the pre-outs (1713), Zone 2 audio is limited to NET/USB and "analog" connected sources only (ie. no HDMI or optical/digital coax).

Can somebody tell me if it's possible to navigate through the network mp3 files using the 1713 amplifier OSD, or is it compulsory to switch on the TV ?
