Media Browser finds art but not movies.xml

Thread Starter
I used Assassin's guide for most of my HTPC, and have been using Media Browser for my movies. I've been using Media Center Master to collect metadata, and it seems to be working. Each movie's folder has the art (folder and backdrop files), and movie.xml. At first, Media Browser displayed it all, art and movie info (cast, description, etc).

But a few months back, Media Browser stopped displaying the movie information (description, cast, etc). It still shows the art, and movie.xml is in each movie folder.

I have Media Browser set to NOT allow internet providers, and have tried refreshing and clearing the data many times. Still no movie information.

Any ideas? I've been searching a ton online for this, and haven't found a solution.

Thanks for looking

Try refreshing it in the interface by clicking the gear or whench depending on your skin then clicking refresh on the lower right. In the service application also alow slow providers. I haven't noticed it being slow. You can refresh from there too.

I had this issue recently and did this and now MB is back to normal but IDK if I did anything or if it wuld have repaired itself anyhow.. I think there may have been a reboot in there too!

Thanks Sammy, I tried that, and nothing. And I've already tried a bunch of WMC and W7 reboots.

Same issue started for me a couple months ago. I haven't tried anything to fix it yet. Anyone have info the typical things to check first?

No one else is having this problem?

Working fine for me.

I tried updating the library from the gear icon. No luck. I have internet providers turned off (I use MCM).

Try doing a total rebuild of all images, backdrops ...etc. You can also try to clear the data first.

Have you updated media browser and MCM? There was an issue a while back. Pete who makes MCM changed the xml file to "movies" from "mymovies" or something like that. And mediabrowser stopped recognizing them. I tried to to have A look on MCM forum but couldn't find the topic. I originally found the info on the MB tracker. If you look in the MCM settings there is an option on what type of XML to create for MB. Sorry I couldn't help more but I think your problem is related to this.

^^^ MB only recognizes movies.xml now.

It was My Movies not Media Center Master that has beef with Media Browser. My Movie encrypted the mymovies.xml file.

This must be it. Goddamit. I suppose this is an attempt to force you to use their own metadata scraper? Forcing me into your own closed system is NOT going to get me to use your products.

I have been researching this and have found the issue.

The issue is you need to have "mymovies.xml" (not "movie.xml" as someone stated earlier) in your movie folder.

I am working on step by step instructions on how to create or fix this issue after I complete a little internal testing of my own.

I should already have mymovies.xml. I think that is one of the default formats MCM creates? I mean nothing has changed with my metadata in the movie folders, MB just quit showing the descriptions (not reading the xml I suppose).

The issue seems to be that MCM now deletes the mymovies.xml files and replaces them with movie.xml files.

I am still doing some testing.

Yes as I stated eariler. My Movies encrypted the mymovies.xml file. So if you want to use My Movies with Media Broswer you need to pay $20 in order to use a combo of the two. As of ver 2.5 Media Browser now looks for movies.xml.

So...I thought MCM generated the mymovie.xml, well I know it does, but how does My Movies factor into this, I don't have My Movies installed, I'm not even sure what it does? Or is it MCM created mymovie.xmls were encrypted by MCM to maintain compatibility with My Movies or something?

Update your copy of MB.

MCM did generate a mymovies.xml file. Another program called My Movies decided to encrypted its file also named mymovies.xml. So now MB and MCM just renamed the file movies.xml.

Okay I have inserted new step by step illustrated steps over at my blog on how to correct this but I will lay it out here as well since I am feeling nice.

If you haven't ever used my guides consider using them.

1. Make sure you are running the most recent version of MB. Download here: http://www.mediabrowser.tv/download

2. Inside MCM go to "Applications" and then "Settings & Preferences". Click "create mymovies/xml copy for old version of MediaBrowser".

3. Now highlight all of your media and right click to bring up the menu. Select "Export to other metadata formats"

4. If you look in your media folders you will see that you now have both "movie.xml" and "mymovies.xml" metadata files. This is what you need for Media Browser

5. Update the library from within Media Browser. Your metadata should again appear.

Since it appears MCM already changed all my mymovies.xml to movies.xml at some point I just updated MB, I was running an old version that only looked at mymovies.xml. It's rebuilding the library now but my Recently Added are showing the descriptions properly.

I think its a good idea to just have both in your folder. That way should MCM or Media Browser change again in the future you are covered.

xml files take up almost no room at all.
