I had Jeff Meyer, a professional from Missouri that someone on here sent me to, to calibrate my VT50. He did an excellent job and the settings were pretty close to the one's I've posted on here.
I talked with Jeff by phone and by many, many emails about calibrating my VT50 and told him about my 7.1 system that I installed and the gear I purchased. He told me that since he's going to calibrate my VT50, for an extra $100 he would calibrate my audio system as well since he would have his equipment with him. I have a Integra DHC-80.3 and Integra DTA-70.1 with (7) ceiling speakers by Definitive Technology. The RCS II's for the fronts and center, and the RSS II's for the side and rear speakers. And a 12" JL Audio Fatham F112 subwoofer. Now, my room installation was a very unorthodox setup which I have posted on here. Check it out and be prepared to laugh and see how stupid and ridiculous I was to do this transformation; but it worked, Jeff is truly a magician. It's kind of my little man cave. When he came in June to do his calibration, he couldn't believe what he saw. But he was very kind and said, "it is what it is", and that he's seen worse and then he went to work. Unfortunately; for the size of my room, he was only able to do a 5.1 configuration.
He started on the Plasma and created a day and night setting for me plus calibrating the 3D features too. He's a very pleasant person to talk to and very intelligent being a retired chemical engineer. We talked about his life and family while he was doing his calibration. The TV took about an hour and the audio system took about 5 hours since I couldn't keep my big mouth shut by asking him so many different questions about my system and his life. He answered all my questions and was very kind. I wish I would have known about him before I purchased my equipment cause he could of helped me determine the best system for my small room and I wouldn't have wasted so much time and money installing a 7.1 system when I'm only using 5 of the 7 speakers.
After the calibration of my audio gear, he gave me a graph of the audio improvements and putting it up against the graph of the Audyssey Multi EQ XT32 setup I used on my own. His calibration made a tremendous difference in sound quality. The movies seem to come alive and jump out at you. He also calibrated the subwoofer and it's phase control and what incredible impact it made compared to the Audyssey setup. If your on a budget, then the Audyssey is good enough. But after hearing and seeing the difference between the two calibrations, I'll never use Audyssey again. It was worth hiring a professional to calibrate my system. And even though the VT50 uses the shutter system technology in the 3D realm instead of passive technology, the calibration made the 3D come so alive that objects were right there I my face. I'll be buying more 3D movies now.
He also told me how amazed he was from the sounds he heard when he was finished and told me that he couldn't believe how good my system sounded with ceiling speakers compared to the traditional floor standing speakers. He never liked Def. Tech in-wall/ceiling speakers until after he heard and calibrated mine. Now he's a new believer of the speakers sounding like there floor standing speakers and will recommend them to new clients that have small, unorthodox rooms like my room setup.
We watched some scenes of Star Wars battle scenarios of space fights and it was so amazing to hear the fighters flying over my head. What an incredible experience. We also listened to some audio CD's he brought with him and the music was also tremendous sounding.
Since then, I've converted 70% of all my DVD to Blue-Rays and have added close to 200+ more Blue-Ray movies to my collection within the past two months. Every time I sit down to watch a movie, I become so amazed at the realism I'm encountering. And I still don't have a true surround system setup. But his calibration techniques really work and my system is blowing me away each time a watch a move. For years I've been using Audyssey setups and thought life was good. But not until I had my system calibrated by a professional. What a major difference it made. It's sad though that Jeff is thinking of retiring in 5 to 6 years now. He's starting to recruit some people to teach them his methods to continue his work. He won't be making house calls anymore as his employees will be traveling on their own. I hope he's still around when I update my system in the future.
I still stay in touch with him from time to time to see how he's doing. He's a very nice guy to talk to and gives great advice. I've had some minor handshaking issues with my system and when I email him, he responds back to me very quickly with the solution. He's a great guy and I hope others who read this post will consider using him for their future setups. But get him while he's still around. Don't wait too long.
Thank you for reading my long and boring post and I apologize for it's length. I'm worse than a woman as I can't stop talking or typing. Not to put down the ladies out there. Not all of them talk as much as I do. LOL!
I hope all of you have a blessed summer and a blessed life as well. And for those who have messaged me with advice, thanks for everything. I'm glad that I have found such a great website and community who cares about everyone and will go out of their way each time to help others with problems they may have. Thanks AVS. Now I'll finally shut the heck up. Edited by Cigarjohn47 - 8/21/13 at 8:07pm
