Does anyone stray from calibration for certain movies?

I have noticed with some movies black scenes seem to be rather grey. Such as the whole movie is a bit bright. Bumping the black levels down seems to make the picture an overall better quality. Does anyone else do this and think its an "OK" practice.

Or is something wrong with my source chain.
Are there any examples in movies of pure black that anyone can think of that should show no light.

My black levels were set with the AVS HD 709 so that 17 was just visible.

it just means they weren't mastered to show digital 16 as the darkest shade of black, but rather something a bit higher... while you can change brightness for those movies, it may be easier just to leave it alone
