NETGEAR wndr4500

Thread Starter
I just purchased the NETGEAR 4500 and have a question about icon led lights. Should the internet icon be flashing green and orange? Just want to make sure it shouldn't be a solid color as the other icons.

Thanks for your help!

The internet light should be green, orange is bad, ie: no internet.

Strange considering Internet is working and have 100% signal strength via wifi.

Thanks

The LED's do not flash on/off once the router is booted up. See more about amber lights below.

Download the User Manual from Netgear's 4500 web page (Documentation tab) for more info.

Table 1. Front panel LED descriptions

Power/Test
• Solid amber. The unit is starting up after being powered on.
• Solid green. The power is on, and the router is ready.
• Blinking amber. A firmware update is in progress.
• Blinking green. The firmware is corrupt.
• Off. Power is not supplied to the router.

Internet
• Solid amber. The IP address has not been acquired.
• Solid green. An IP address has been received; ready to transmit data.
• Off. No Ethernet cable is connected between the router and the modem.

2.4 GHz
• Solid blue. The wireless radio is operating.
• Off. The wireless radio is off.

5 GHz
• Solid blue. The wireless radio is operating.
• Off. The wireless radio is off.

LAN ports 1–4
• Solid green. The LAN port has detected a 1,000 Mpbs link with an attached device.
• Solid amber. The LAN port has detected a 10/100 Mbps link with an attached device.
• Off. No link is detected on this port.

USB (2 LEDs)
• Solid. The USB device had been accepted by the router and is ready to be used.
• Blinking. The USB device is in use.
• Off. No USB device is connected, or the Safely Remove Hardware button has been clicked and it is now safe to remove the attached USB device.

Thanks. I rebooted the router and internet icon is solid green. You think I should be concerned that the icon was flashing orange/green? I mean I just got this router yesterday. Could internet company "Comcast" have caused it?

No. As th post in #4 shows, most likely it was trying to update the firmware on its own. That is why I always turn "auto firmware downloader" off on routers.

Where do you go to disable auto download? I do know I was prompted to do an update last night when setting router up.

Have this router and it's awesome!!! You should be able to turn off the update feature in the router "settings" menu. You got log into it.

Where exactly is this "auto update" setting? I don't see it in the browser GUI version of Genie or in the User Manual.

I would think a firmware auto-update capability would be potentially hazardous since wireless firmware updates can brick your router.

It isn't a wireless update unless you are uploading a file from your computer. Allowing the built in updated to run and starting it from a wireless device is completely fine. The auto update setting should be under "Advanced" and then Administration I believe.

Updating the firmware using a downloaded file on your hard drive should always be done using a wired connection to the router.

The router will look for firmware updates when you log onto Genie, which you then must click to begin the update process, but it does not have an auto-update feature. This is why I asked for the exact location of this alleged setting. Maybe I don't have it with my firmware version - V1.0.0.70_1.0.18, but nobody has posted the specific location probably because it doesn't exist, not even in the User Manual.

Wow did you read my post? Most Netgear routers have an auto update checker. I have not seen a Netgear router that will just update itself without user input. You may be right about that setting, I'm not sure, it is typcially there.

But you do not have to download a file to update these routers. I could log into a WNDR4500 from my iPhone and update the firmware using the web based GUI. It isn't considered a "wireless firmware update",
