Looking for a great reciever, very overwhelmed with all of the options...

First off haven't had surround sound in like 15 years, be easy..

Alright, just bought a house and the front 3 speakers are boston acoustic in wall speakers, the rear 2 are in the ceiling. I am also looking for a sub but that is in a different forum...

Anyways this is what i am interested in:

Airplay or some sort of way to control it via a ipad/iphone/bb

at least 5.1

a second zone so i can get outdoor speakers for the deck

a device like yamahas YPAO that auto selects a good configuration

at least 4 HDMI pass thru's and a component or two

the ability to stream music

That is all i can think of for now, i like the Yamaha RX-671v more than the denon 1912. Do i need all of those options, is there something else i should be looking at? Trining to spend under 500...

I've had a great experience with my RX -v671 and nothing but praise for the Yamaha brand this is my 3rd reciever in about 15 yrs all Yamaha and all still work as of today with zero problems. As for the 671 the iPad app works great and I love having the net radio and pandora. I use Tversity to stream audio from my computer.

2011 Onkyo models can be found for a great price right now as the 2012 line is coming out slowly. Onkyo 609 or 809 maybe? 809 has much better video processing (HQV Vida) but both could work for you maybe.

I don't think those Onkyo's have Airplay (I'm not sure) but Onkyo does have an Ipad app to control your system.

Onkyos also have quality control problems, so if you do find that onkyo is the receiver you want, be sure to check its owners thread before purchasing.

You can't go wrong with a Yamaha or Denon.

A lot of those 'problems' seem to have been fixed now. But I would agree with consulting other threads before making a final decision.

As I was told earlier in another thread, no Onkyos have Airplay.

So glad I'm not the only one that has been overwhelmed by trying to pick a new receiver. In my current "open box" price range I have seen a Denon 1912 and a Pioneer 1021. I currently have the Denon. The Denon has great great sound but it has a smaller feature set(less ports, no video upscaling, zone 2 is analog only and no zone 2 preouts). I thought about the Onkyo nr609 for $100 more. It has video processing, plenty ports(VGA!), and SirusXM internet streaming but it doesn't have airplay and Audessy MultiEQ.

Oh the decisions.

But Onkyo's can be controlled with their iPad app..

The 609 only has Audyssey 2EQ, but the 809 has XT which is quite good as a receiver with XT32 is in a whole other price range. But then again the 809 is not in the same price range as the 609.. but both can be found right now for much less than msrp.

Last month I purchased a 609, returned it after a week for the 809 - much more satisfied with XT and the HQV chip in the 809, it was worth the extra $ for me. My only regret is that the 818 is about to come out and it has XT32!

What kind of budget are you working with?

The Onkyo 818, as long as the issues are addressed from past models, really looks interesting for features vs. its price range. It also has the pretty lauded Audyssey XT32 calibration software.

If you wait a bit longer, Onkyo may be adding Airplay to their lineup... may be why there's been a delay with the upper models.

Th 671 uses the same amp as I do on my aventage model. It's a very well feature app. It allows zone control, party mode control, music playback from your android or iOS device, inputs, dsp's, etc. you can download it and play around with it's demo mode. It will give you an idea of what you can do with it.

I like to stream my sirius XM and use the Yamaha amp to control it. What's cool is on my iPad, it gives you great details on the channels, what's playing, genre breakdown, etc.

Do yo need 2 subs? you will probably upgrade before 4k becomes useful so airplay would be the only real upgrade and that can be accomplished with the 671 for less than the price difference. But its only money and you will have a brand new forum thread with lots of traffic to participate in.

Problem is hdmi 1.4a doesn't support full spectrum 4k, only half. Besides, where is the 4k content? We're a good 5 years away from any small mainstream 4k content. People have to buy into it and after the big 3d crazed and adoption, 4k will have a slow upgrade path.

You must be talking about the EM9600 OLED TV that is promised later this year. I don't know if I'd sign up for the bleeding edge of that technology or not. But if you are then yes I would wait in fact I would wait until the tv comes out and I was sure of the equipment that it would support otherwise you may find yourself having to buy new receiver, BD Player and who knows what other pricey toys,
Just my 2 cents,
Dave
