Apartment Speakers - Denon 1712

Greetings!

I am looking for recommendations for first time speakers purchase for a home theater system. I am/have built an HTPC, and have settled on the Denon 1712 receiver. My TV is a 48 inch Plasma. I plan on using the system for 20% music, 80% TV/Movies. I do not plan on gaming on this system.

My Room is rectangular, 14 1/2 feet X 14 feet with two openings, no solid doors. The couch is 10 Feet Directly across from the TV. I live on the 2nd floor of a 3 story apartment building. Room Layout below.

I don't want to skimp on speakers. But I also am not an audiophile. I'm looking for quality speakers that fit within the price range of what the Denon 1712 can handle. I am looking for floor standing speakers for Left and Right, and a Center channel that I can put on the top shelf of the TV stand which sits 18 inches off the ground, and 11 inches below the TV. I would like to add a Sub as well.

At this point, I don't really care about Rear Left and Right Speakers. I would add them at some point in the future though.

Thanks for any recommendations you might have.

Edit:Price Range: 800-1k$

Your statement about price range doesn't really mean anything, you need to let us know the max you're willing to spend if you want to get your moneys worth. Measurements (HxWxD) of the center channel location would be extremely helpful.

What exactly is a flat center channel if you're using a TV stand?

and without some kind of budget nobody will be able to help you.

Jay1 - I had read that a good range is twice what you pay for the receiver. I think the Denon 1712 new was $400, so 800-1k$ for Speakers.

Afrogt - My TV floats above the TV Stand which has two shelves. I would like to put the Center channel Speaker on the top shelf, which is 18 inches off the ground, and 11 inches below the TV. I can also wall mount it above and behind the TV, which would put it at five feet above the floor, and 20 inches behind the TV.

Hey Gruzzen -

Great choice on the receiver. I have the same receiver and I like it so far.

I tried to assemble a budget theater for my small apartment. My room is about 13' x 14'

I have a 5.1 setup - Energy Veritas V-Mini bookshelves and V-Mini-C. My sub is a Polk Audio PSW-111. It's small and it won't make the neighbors too angry. I can tell you that the sub has an 8" woofer but it can hit pretty well - although not as deep as bigger subs. Again, I live in an apartment so I tried to keep everything small and within my budget.

If you have any questions, let me know.

I missed the Deal on the Sub that was recommended by Jay1. However, while reading about that sub, I came across the STF-2 Subwoofer.

How well would this Sub work with the Denon 1712?

No such thing as a sub sounding better on one avr and not the other!

The STF2 is a great little sub, and should do well in your room.
