I can't speak to the series that you're considering, but up until my purchase of a Pioneer SC55 receiver a year ago, I was still using a 34-year-old Crown D75 that was PERFECT. I used it with an Apt-Holman preamp. On this and other forums, everyone told me how the Pioneer was going to blow the other equipment away. And for Blu-ray, it does. But for analog listening, the Apt/Crown combo was far, far better, even though there was (obviously) no room EQ or any other alignment/calibration tools. It was tighter, brighter and had far more impact.
So as far as I'm concerned, the Crown power amps are great. That amp has never had any service of any kind. I'm still holding onto it. When I put in new cabinetry, I'm probably going to put it back in my system. Either I'll use it to drive front Left and Right or I'll put it some kind of switching system to the speakers so I can choose when to use the Apt and Crown.
