MMO style combat

I've been playing World of Warcraft. There are a lot of things I like about it. But I find the combat boring.

Most MMOs seem to have the same style of combat targeting. Is there a technical reason for this? I assume it has something to do with making hit detection a lot easier.

Try Tera Online or Guild Wars 2 (when it comes out) for something a little different.

I was looking forward to GW2. I saw a youtube video from a beta tester that indicated it still has the same combat mechanics except it auto-targets for you. If that is true, I won't be getting it.

Check out Tera Online?

Combat in MMO's are turn based depending on the weapon item you use. Spells/skills have casting times, and auto swings delay depending on your weapon speed. It all goes back to turn based elements from RPG's, (they are MMORPG's after all). Very few break this mold. I have yet to try TERA, but hear it is a bit different as well.

The combat looks good.

I'm not sure about the gameplay though. It still seems to be typical grinding MMO gameplay.

The thing about GW2 that interests me is that the gameplay seems dynamic.

The RPGs I've played, Elder Scrolls and Diablo are not turn based.

yes there is a technical reason for that. old and current gen mmos were built on compensating for lag with multiple types of internet connections but yet built to still be playable in higher lag situations. Now that it is 2012 we are starting to see different combat in mmo because latency issues are much lower now in 2012 compared to 99-2004 for eq and wow like mmo combat games because we have stronger internet across the world now.

Thanks for the kind offer. With Diablo coming out tomorrow I won't have time to try out any other games for a while.

i'd be extremely interested in trying Tera... i'm in the same boat as the OP, and enjoying gw2 beta weekends, but they're too far apart

really interested in Tera, but not sure if I want to drop the $50... skipping D3 for now.
