Looking for versatility

Hi all

I'm absolutely exhausted from doing research on purchases. Have spent all too much time with my friend google on a car (Acura MDX) and a laptop (Sager). Going to try and go against my nature with this purchase! I've never purchased any high quality audio equipment before, so this is a new for me.

What I'd like to get: receiver, 2 book shelf speakers (they dont have to be tiny, just not floor standing monsters) and maybe a subwoofer or center channel if this is what gets recommended.

I'd like to avoid the speakers being too large, as I'll be transporting them across the country (Canada) and have a lot of other stuff going with me.

Speakers will be used for music and movies, and their home will be at the cottage for the next couple of months. After that, as I'll be looking for a new place, I have no idea what the future home will look like. I'm thinking these will be replaced by proper tower front speakers and be used in a bedroom or as surround speakers at a later date.

Budget - $500 - $1000 for a receiver (even if the speakers get upgraded at a later date with towers, the receiver should be good)

$250-$1000 for the speakers. (is it worth it to spend considerable $$ on bookshelves?)

Though not sure whether I should spend more and add a subwoofer or center channel if you think I'd get a much more enjoyable listening experience than just a 2.0 setup. My budget can go up considerably, but I hesitate to spend too much not knowing what the ultimate floor plan will look like in the new house.

Appreciate any help

A nice 2.1 setup is a great place to start. You can find monitors that will have satisfying bass at lower levels, but none will match a decent sub, and none will hit below 40hz with any kind of authority.

For the receiver I recommend buying from A4less. You can get a top of the line receiver from a few years ago, which still has a really good processor. What you get over a regular receiver in this price range is an amp section that can handle any speaker. This Onkyo TX-NR3007 is a beast, and A4less offers a 5 year extended warranty for $90 if you're worried about it being a refurb. This sets you up for the future, as no speaker will be off limits because your receiver is a beef cake.

I can understand you not wanting to invest to much in a system like this that is temporary and has to meet your transportation needs, and a sub that is small is definitely a compromise. I think instead of looking for high end components that fit your needs, a quality pair of small speakers, and a solid budget sub will give you really good performance without making you feel like you wasted money when you finally settle in and invest in a full size setup.

Ascend CBM-170. Fantastically accurate little monitors, with very good dynamics. Would work nicely as surrounds or bedroom speakers for whatever you do in the future.

Energy S10.3. IMO the best sub under $300, with solid output to 25hz, and a flat mid bass response.

For $650 shipped the total package is highly accurate, portable, and full range.

Edit: the energy sub is on sell at newegg for $200 making it an incredible bargain

Thanks for the advice Jay, but I'm not sure whether I'm comfortable purchasing the receiver used, considering additional cost + time shipping for any repairs in and out of Canada.

The only speaker makes I was able to listen to are:

Klipsch RB61 ($625) I liked the sound, but possibly too bright?

Energy CB-20 ($430) They didn't seem to have much in the highs, sounded like more of a subwoofer

Polk Audio FXIA4/RTIA3 ($390-350) I liked the sound, they had a balanced sound, in between the Klipsch and Energys.

Will speakers from the same make all have a similar sound? Ie - do Energys typically have a lower booming sound?

For receivers, Denon AVR 1712 ($400) or the AVR-2312CI for $900

Any other suggestions?

Electronics usually either have problems right away, or after years of continuous use. I think you'll be fine as long as you thoroughly test it out before moving.

For you speaker question, most definitely yes.

I have bought refurbish Marantz and Denon receivers, from AC4L
with no problems. Also, AC4L customer service is good.

Look at some speakers from KEF, Focal and Monitor Audio.
