Question about different HDTV shading

Hi guys. I have an old Samsung CRT style, Flat front 30" Widescreen HDTV that came out years ago. It's bulky and heavy. it doesn't have HDMI inputs, only component. I'm not even sure that it's 720p or not. But I do watch programming on it in HD and it looks pretty good compared to non-HD.

But it's time to go BIGGER, and I've researched many types and styles.

But there is one thing that bothers me about HDTV's, and I don't know what it's called, or what feature it is, or why others seem to really show more of this then others.

I was at my mom's house watching a TV Show on NBC in HD (Grimm). She has a big 55" Samsung TV that I set up for her. I think it looks great. But when watching Grimm, I noticed that it looked MUCH different than on my 30" HD TV. It actually looked WORSE.

To me, it had much more of a "video" look to it, where as my TV has more of a "film" look to it. By that I mean that you could tell they were standing in a TV studio, the makeup FX looked really fake, and it just seemed as though it was all in the "lighting". But my 30" doesn't really show this. I noticed that many shows on her TV look like this, and frankly I hate the way it looks! Oh, it's clear as day, but everything looks like a soap opera. Even shows like CSI looks silly to me on her TV.

So what is it this feature called, and why do certain TV's in stores playing the same DVD reveal this more than others? The only thing I can compare it to is that it's the difference between "film and video". I have to figure this out, because I will not be happy with a TV that makes all of my shows look like this.

I know this is an LED forum, but i'm leaning towards Plasma because I play a lot of XBox, plus, the Plasma TV's seemed to look more like "Film" me. I realize Plasma has it's disadvantages, so I'm not opposed to getting and LED/LCD TV. I just need to know what to look for in a TV to avoid this cheap studio lightling effect, which almost exposes more flaws than I does enhance the image.

Thanks!
Jason

SOE - aka "Soap Opera Effect." Very common on LCD panels - and even some plasmas offer a setting that looks similar.

Search SOE (abbreviated or spelled out) and you will probably find several thousands of posts on AVS & elsewhere.

Also note that the bigger panel will more readily "Show Off" the inherent flaws in the source than your 30" set will: and, as much as we've enjoyed "Grimm," the PQ on that series is often -well - Rather Grim!

That effect is often caused on LCD/LED TVs because they create extra frames from the 24fps film-speed source to display at 120Hz or higher due to slow response time of that type of panel.
Plasmas have lower response time and don't need to use a 120Hz or higher refresh rate, so they can display that looks more like the film source.
