considering being a cheapskate

Been saving for an SVS sub, but something always comes up financially. I've started considering one of the Dayton MkIII build-it-yourself kits for about 1/2 the price. I tend not to believe reviews posted directly on sites that sell the product, so how do they fare here?
The details: 4600 cu.ft. room, rectangle with viewing listening at the short wall, three standard door openings to other areas of the house, Altecs for everything but my current passive sub (which sucks). I do about 1/3 of my time on music, 1/3 on movies, 1/3 on regular broadcast TV (during which I like to keep the theater experience to a minumum).

I should add that the room is fairly bright, and sub placement is asthetically limited to the LF corner of the room.

i guess I'm asking two questions: 1. if anyone here has auditioned these and 2. if they're right for my room.
