Ughh...Darn you clumsiness and JBL foam!

So I finally cut up a 12v dc power adapter that I ordered from parts express to powerup my mini dsp and test it out. Loaded up the configuration I wanted and went to the speaker system to test it out. At some point while it was hooked up I slipped while i was messing with the amp and when i braced my self my hand like half pushed down the surge protectors power button and cause a brief flicker of power(best I can describe it). All of the sudden I noticed my JBL 2245h freaking out so I immediately cut power to everything.

When I booted everything back up things seemed to be back to normal until the bass started coming in and I can now see the foam on the top half of the JBL has come unglued from the speaker cone and basket.

So now I have two JBL 2245h drivers that are in need of new foam, I previously had one where the foam was starting to rot.

How easy is it to refoam these? are kits like these fairly easy to do?

I also called the local JBL repair center this morning and the guy I spoke to said they no longer sell JBL foam kits for these models, so if I really wanted a factory job I'd probably need to get a whole recone cause he can still get those kits which have the foam ($270 :/) Or depending on the 2245hs baskets it might be possible to recone to a 2242h ($220) if the specs match.

So now I'm deciding between attempting a refoam, getting a recone, or should I just say eff it and go buy a new driver from parts express like this http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=295-036, the specs seem somewhat close lol

grrr...I should have never started upgrading and remained ignorant and blissful

At the risk of stating the obvious, can you glue it back together? Craft glue and a little tape might be all you need..

I've refoamed drivers, and it's a lot easier to reglue a parting line because you don't have to worry about alignment. Sadly, once the foam's gone, you'll need a kit. The ultimate value is up to you, but JBL does make good stuff. Too bad you don't need a cone, coil and spider, too!

HAve fun,

Its not that hard to re-foam speaker your self. I just refoamed a pair of 5" JBL's and they turned out perfect. Most of the work is removing the old foam which most of it peeled off with my fingers then I scraped the rest off with a dull utility knife. Its ok to leave glue on the cone cuz new glue will stick to the old glue just fine.
With the surround foam off, the cone surprisingly will center itself. Once you have the old foam removed and you fit the new foam in place, you"ll see that glueing it on will be a very simple process.
Read the online directions 1st, they come handy. The glue gets tacky fairly quick so place the new foam right away so you can slide it or "fudge it" into place, if need be. Mine required the 2 part assembly cuz the surround foam was qlued to underside of the cone, which required me to qlue the foam to the cone first.

Good luck!

I've refoamed four 15" and four 6.5" Earthquakes from 1991. It takes about a day and most of that is waiting for glue to dry. I go the extra step of removing the dust cap and shimming the coil so that everything is lined up.

Thanks for the responses guys. I went ahead and ordered a refoam kit from rick cobb on ebay cause I saw a bunch of posts recommending him. I'll let you know when I attempt to fix these bad boys.

If it's any consolation, JBL never sold foam surround kits for any of their drivers. So your JBL repair center didn't have a clue in the first place. And I think the 2240 and E155 kits are the only ones that'll fit the same basket as the 2245, you made the right choice IMHO.
