Sharpness pattern

Does any one know a good pattern for sharpness calibration? I found Avs 709 sharpness/overscan to be impractical to use.

I agree the lined patterns seem to be very ambiguous WRT halos or softness judgment call. Even when looking very closely and carefully to a pattern it is difficult. Also, the acceptable range seems quite large or variable.

To me it seems like a vertical swept sinusiodal signal starting at mid frequencies and going to the very highest resolution limits may be easier to view the effects of the sharpness control. In other words the pattern should be a even tone of gray (black to white). If sharpness control is doing anything negative there should be relative brightness shift in the pattern. So, adjust until pattern has uneven brightness then adjust back down until the pattern is an even gray tone across all frequencies.

This type of pattern is on the THX Optimizer (and others) as part of the Overall Check with color bars. However, it is very small. In addition I don't know what is the frequency upper limit.

Greetings

Spears and Munsil has a good one ... so does DVE and Disney WOW too.

You would want a pattern that have a medium gray background and black lines on it ... preferably running up down and left/right

What type of display is it?
It has been found that using the brightness pattern of the AVS disk (first one all dark flashing bars) after brightness is set, works well on some display types. Turn off all lights and get close to the set, turn up the sharpness and watch the pattern for white vertical lines where the flashing bars would be below 16 or if you set clips btb right at 16-17. If they show up, turn sharpness down till the go away. It has worked for me on LCD and Plasma. This side effect was reported by anther AVS member in another sharpness thread.

IMO the best sharpness pattern is the disney wow disc.

It's LED LCD display, Samsung UN55D7000 I tried to use the black level pattern to adjust my sharpness. My sharpness is currently at 4 instead of 12. I put on DVE bluray disc to calibrate my sharpness. Still hard to distinguish the different between artificial noise and such. Unless I turn my Sharpness to like 50 which is way to high.
