How to change audio codec? (FLAC to AC3 in a MKV file)

Thread Starter
I got a Philips BD player, which plays .mkv files, but it doesn't support some audio codes, like FLAC.

Trying to change the audio codec of my .mkv files (with FLAC audio codec) to something my player can support.

I'm looking a very good program that let's you change audio codecs for MKV, but letting totally untouched everything else, like video.

These are the audio codecs the player supports: PCM, AC-3, DTS core, MPEG, MP3, WMA, AAC, HE-AAC.

I'm not that good with these kind of things, so any help will be appreciated, like which codec mentioned you recommend or anything else (i've read AC3 or AAC are good).

Also i'm not sure if this is the right forum to ask.

Thank you all.

This can be done with free tools, but it would be a multi-step manual process for each file:
  • extract the flac
  • convert it to wav
  • convert the wav to mp3 (or other supported codec)
  • create a new mkv file with the original video and new audio

I presume you want a one-step automated solution?

Demux: mkvextract
http://sourceforge.net/projects/mkvextractgui-2/

flac.exe -d
to extract the wav

Convert: wav2ac3
http://code.google.com/p/wavtoac3encoder/

Remux: mkvmerge

If you need to do a load of these, I'm sure if you are motivated enough, you can cook up a script to automate a whole folder full of mkv's

  • I agree with wmcclain. If you only want to change the audio format, I suggest you extract the audio from MKV file to MP3 format, then using video editor(windows movie maker) to add the converted audio to specified mkv file. Before adding the audio, you had better delete the audio file of the mkv video. I'm not sure if this is what you really want. It's just a suggestion.
  • Here is a link you can check to learn how to convert mkv file to mp3 directly.http://www.apowersoft.com/convert-mkv-file-to-mp3.html
