Help Connecting Older Sub...

I recently purchased a Harman AVR 3600 along with a new center and left/right speakers, however, I plan on using my old Sony sub for now.

The sub only has +/- wire terminals, no LFE. Is it possible to use the sub on my new Harman?

Sounds like it's a passive sub. You can:
- buy an external amp to power it (AVR --> power amp --> subwoofer); or
- buy a new sub.

Thanks for the quick response. After doing some research, i've read of people connecting the sub to the left/right speaker inputs on the receiver, or something along those lines. Has anyone heard of this?

Speaker outputs on the receiver.

If your sub is powered and has speaker level inputs AND outputs, you can connect your AVR's main (or "A") L+R speakers outputs to the L+R speaker inputs on your sub, then connect the L+R speaker outputs on the sub to your L+R main speakers.

In the subwoofers speaker set-up menu, you'd set Subwoofer to "None" (or whatever HK's equivalent setting is).

Then you'd adjust the "crossover" on the back of the sub to ~80Hz or to whatever frequency you find provides the best balance between the sub and speakers.

You can connect the sub to the front speaker terminals on the receiver then the 2 front speakers to the speaker level out terminals on the sub. That works better for music but for HT, the LFE (sub out) connection will let the receiver's bass management work more properly.

As suggested above, get a subwoofer amp or buy a new sub.

Thanks, i'll give this a try. I plan on buying a sub next paycheck. I already spent a good portion of this payday on the receiver and front speakers, more than I was planing

, so this is only temporary. I have my eyes set on a JBL powered sub.

If you connect the subwoofer using the speaker level terminals, as eljaycanuck said above, in the receiver's MENU you need to set the Subwoofer to NONE, the two main left & right speakers to LARGE and other speakers to SMALL so the receiver's bass management would route the bass to the front speakers/subwoofer. Remember to adjust the crossover control on the sub accordingly for the front speakers.
