Marvel's The Avengers - Page 15

Yeah, I just watched that scene. It's very dark, which makes it look almost black depending on the lighting, and there's that one shot (backlit) that you can see the color stronger, it looks more maroon in that shot. But overall, it's a very dark purple/maroon. The scarf/shawl she had at the beginning of the conversation was a much lighter shade.

My TV is badly in need of... well, let's be honest, a new TV. As I was watching that scene, I kept thinking how washed out the blacks looked, and I'm pretty sure it's just the poor black levels on my TV.. I've been spending more time on my computer than the big-screen lately, and my computer monitor is much newer and much darker blacks.

I was in for a major letdown with the blu ray however. Not only is this nowhere near reference quality, it's not that much better than average! Colors are a bit washed out and detail/sharpness is only average.
A major letdown--this should've been one of the top 5 best looking blu rays of all time.

Looked great to me!

Yeah, I'm running a Mit 65734 from way back in '08-'09 wink.gif I still regard it as a great picture but the dated RPTV tech is not without it's limitations. This was really made apparent when I first viewed The Avengers BD on my fiance's Samsung LCD. I just makes a huge difference in how the movie looks. And I don't remember how the Banner/Romanova scene looked on her tv but I'm sure the colors were much better.

So one of the things I really like about this movie is the attention to detail from Whedon. I noted things like the security cameras in the hallway when Loki was captured. And after the engine on the helicarrier was damaged, the black smoke drafting over the engine was nicely done. However.......it's been a little while now so it's time to have a little fun with it......there were a couple of scenes on the helicarrier when Fury was in the conference room talking to Cap and Stark and Stark's chest piece wasn't lit through his shirt whereas in previous scenes it was lit.

Someone pointed out a good one a couple months ago. The helicarrier has two runways on it. One of which leads directly over the front left engine. Any plane taking off on that runway (like the one that Fury shot at), would fly directly over the engine and likely get sucked right in. It might have made sense if they had just decided that was for landings only when the thing was in the air, but they actually used it in the film for a plane taking off.

The security cameras always baffled me because they used the giant, white, industrial security cameras instead of sleek, compact cameras or hidden cameras. A little strange for such a high tech espionage vessel.

I'm 95% certain that Stark's chest piece is always lit, it's just really hard to see in some scenes (black shirt + facing bright exterior windows). LED lighting is also extremely directional, so the chestpiece is usually much fainter when viewed from the side. I may be wrong, but it wouldn't be the first time.

IIRC, they only repaired the rear left rotor (exploded) but never regained control of the front left rotor (arrow virus) so it was not active when the planes went to launch, making it perfectly safe to fly over. biggrin.gif

First time I ever saw her was the opening scene of "Lost in Translation". Good movie. wink.gif

I must admit that I'm not as impressed with her "talent" ever since her cell phone photos leaked out to the Internet a while back...

I don't think he was saying he was offended by it, just that he wasn't as impressed as he thought he was going to be when he ultimately saw the pics. That was how I took it, at least.

Not strange at all.

In highly secure areas, you generally want to make sure people definitely know they're being monitored. I big camera draws attention to itself and reminds anyone with a loose sense of duty to stay on track. Further, those big cameras are often meant to make you not notice the hidden smaller cameras that might also be deployed.

Plus, in some cases, what looks like a big clunky camera is just a tamper-proof box to protect the camera. In other cases, they use the bigger cameras because they have both a larger zoom lens, a larger CCD imager (as opposed to CMOS) for improved resolution, remote pan/tilt/zoom controls and even a heating system for use in areas exposed to extreme temperatures. Finally, those larger cameras are also often less prone to be affected by RF or other interference due to their better shielding.

You can't get all that in a lipstick cam.

At work, in our high security areas, we use those big clunky cameras for exactly the reasons I gave. Simply put, they're low-maintenance work horses that are often more reliable than the technology they're guarding.

We've got the same cameras, I understand why we use them in the REAL world, but it just didn't fit the Helicarrier. I should clarify: aesthetically, the big dorky cameras sort of took me out of the scene - a ship with advanced autostereoscopic displays and that wicked cool holographic helm, those cameras were just too obvious. I believe Whedon was probably trying to make it obvious that cameras were present - as many scenes involved characters watching/listening to Loki in prison - but the same effect could have been done with sleek, futuristic cameras. It's only a nitpick.

Has anyone else listened to the commentary track? It's pretty fun - Whedon is such a nerd! haha

I was watching this before on my panasonic and thought meh, good but not great.

Popped the disc into my sony and hot diggity damn, the disc now has afterburners!

I've said many times that the sony and pana are identical for blu ray playback, but now I'm starting to wonder if the sony might be just a bit better. The settings are identical for both inputs; however, I have the panasonic run through a hdmi switcher. Both the sony and pana are set to the 'avs approved' settings. If lovin' the sony picture is 'wrong' I don't wanna be right!
