The key difference is a lot of people know about Avatar, Titanic, Dark Knight, Star Wars, Alien, etc.
Honestly, how often do you hear people talk about The Abyss?
that is a good qustion.. actually people that I know remember it fondly like with other james cameron films. for some reason the marketing never talks about it.
the release back in 1993/94 was shown in SF and sacramento.
The "Abyss" DVD was re-re-released three times in the US because?!?!
As well as a release in 8 other countries; even though: "how often do you hear people talk about The Abyss?"?!?!
count me in as another loyal fan thats really disappointed - make that discouraged - of reports that The Abyss has been push to 201314!!
True, it doesnt have a fan base of Star Wars, Batman, Terminator or Avatar.
But for those of us that are fans, this is one of our favorite movies. [sigh] i still have the non-anamorphic 2 disc dvd. havent seen it since i got my blu ray, guess I can give it a spin for old-times sake.
You also might as well change the topic of this thread to TBA. Every year we keep hearing the same things -- some vague notion that "they're coming" -- and now it's "whenever Cameron gets around to it." Which could be 2013, 2014, 2015...fact is nobody knows, obviously, since he's such "a busy guy."
Just like I posted when this thread initially started -- until something concrete is actually announced, it's worthless to keep speculating and hoping for them. I'll believe it when I read something official and not another "Rumor Mill" post that's been speculating over their release for literally years now.
Avatar is fresh from 2009. Abyss I'm not sure lots of people would run to their local multiplex to watch it, regardless of its running time. And Abyss doesn't have the same "all-time masterpiece" status as Avatar.
LOL at Avatar as an "all time masterpiece." Just because it made a truckload of money doesn't make it a good, much less great, movie. Come back in 2029 and see how many people still care about it.

Agree...however, studios DO gauge public interest in back catalog titles when considering future releases.

"Masterpiece" is an entirely subjective term and can be defined in a million different ways.

Of course it doesn't.

It reminds me of The Beatles remastered program, in which a poster for yrs posted he had insider info they would be released.
And when it finally did, he was bragging he told us so.
It was the little boy who cried wolf all over again.
It's called "The Rumor Mill" for a reason.
Although I wouldn't doubt some industry insider has indeed been saying for yrs it is coming; only too find James in a sub somewhere as apposed too getting these titles ready.
I even 'believe' (I have no proof) the studio would like too release 'em.
True lies is on TCM in the UK in HD tonight, will check if it is the old dvhs transfer
i saw it a few weeks ago, its pretty damn good looking, not seen the dvhs though (i had forgotten all about those, nearly bought one too) i was lucky enough to be on holiday in new york when this came out and saw it in 70mm at the ziegfeld, now that looked and sounded good, brought be back down to earth when i went back home to the odeon dudley!
The TRUE LIES open matted HBO broadcast from eons ago is noticeably superior to the noise reduced DTheater. That doesn't bode well for an eventual Blu-Ray release.
Thankfully I have my DVHS recording of the HBO broadcast.
Cast: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tom Arnold Director: James Cameron
A man who secretly works for the government discovers his wife is also leading a double life as she is seeing another man. Now, he must simultantaneously deal with a top secret mission and an emotional mission of revenge.
Air Dates:
I mean I'm going to be happy once we finally get these two movies but good Lord there was no reason at all to wait so long to release them. I can't begin to describe my annoyance at the way these two movies have been treated.

I have 9 of my all time favorite movies. the abyss is the only one missing from it.
