Obviously, the answer would depend on the quality of the 4K processor. Real world wise, we are in the infant stage of upscaling to 3840 x 2160 and/or 4096 x 2160. Owners of the sony VPL-vw1000ES are finding that using a Lumagen to upscale sources below 1080p to 1080p and then using the 1000ES' internal processor to go from there to 3840 x 2160or 4096 x 2160 results in a better image than doing all of the upscaling via the 1000ES's internal processor. While some bluray players and receivers provide upscaling to 3840 x 2160, such upscalers are not as good as the upscaling done by the 1000ES. In the near future stand alone video processors will become available to upscale to 3840 x 2160 and 4096 x 2160. One would expect these processors to exceed the PQ generaterd by the internal 1000ES processor for no other reason than the Sony processor is a first generation. Also such processors will be able to process a 4K signal as well perhaps regarding noise reduction, contrast enhancement, etc.
