Help, receiver got a little wet.

I had a garage sale this past weekend and i got rained out. Well, out in this rain for about 30 seconds was a yamaha integrated amplifier (most of the top of the amp is heat vents). It never sold and im thinking i might actually still have some use for it. It is a pretty nice amp, good condition, and fully functional (well, was before the rain)...... It wasnt a down pour, but it was a decent rain. Definately more than a sprinkle so im sure a little water got in and settled on the components inside. I havnt plugged it in, its been drying out for almost 48 hours (was probably dry within 30 minutes, just being cautious)..... Anyways, i was wondering if it was a good idea to plug it in and see if it is ok..... Does anyone think it will be ok? Or is it not a great idea?

Turn it upside down and shake it, use a hair dryer or compressed air. Never know, there might be a collection of water in a low spot. When you do plug it in, I would used a strip with a ~15-20A breaker because I happen to have one.

I hope that your receiver is ok. PS It is nice to see another Cerwin Vega fan on here. I love Cerwin Vega

Since it was off when the rain got in there's a good chance it will still work. 48 hours is a good amount of time to wait, but the longer you wait, the higher the probability of the receiver working. A receiver has a bunch of nooks and crannies so I would wait longer if you can. Really, wait as long as you can tolerate. When I spill water on my computer (I water cool) I generally wait 24-48 hours before turning it on and during some of that time I have a space heater near it to help dry it out. The thing with my computer is that I can easily take it apart and lay out the wet pieces for the water to dry faster, which is why I would wait a bit longer for a receiver. Running a dehumidifier may also be a good idea as it will dry out the air allowing for any moisture in the receiver to dry up as well.

Years ago I had a VW that I installed an external amp in the glove box. On the glove box door I sat my coffee. I had to hit the binders really hard one day sending hot coffee into the amp. It squealed and made some very nasty noises. I shut it off almost immediately after that spill. After I got off work I came out to the car - turned on the radio and then tried the amp since I had little to lose at that point - viola! - it worked just fine after drying out. Water by itself is a very poor conductor of electricity. Not having the amp powered on during that rain storm might have saved it for you. Like others mentioned - after goodly interval give it a try. It probably will work.

I agree with the posters above. I would also add that you could take the cover off the amp and get in there with a hair dryer. Then you could also inspect the inside a bit for any stray water before attempting to power it up. You should be OK if you are careful about drying up any water inside.

Good luck!
