subwoofer help

I recently bought a Polk Audio DSW PRO550wi to go with my polk RC65i in ceiling speakers. Overall I like the sub but it is large. I am looking at the Energy ESW-M8 and was wondering which would be better? I mostly watch movies but also listen to music as well but i would say 80-20 is the mix. I paid $335 for the Polk and can get the energy for $299. Which is better?

Oh great! I just purchased the same sub and it should be delivered this Friday. I was worried that it would be too big. I contemplated the energy sub as well, but everything i read said that 8" subs do not give deep, base nor do they work well with larger rooms. I finally went with the 550wi over the 440wi and energy sub because I figured that it would be better to go with a 10" sub. I was looking for longevity. I am guessing the wife will not be happy once she sees it in our living room then. Oh well better to ask for forgiveness. Lol

I tell ya I got a 12" sub and thought it would be too big but after having and 8 and a 10 I won't go back. The lows from a larger sub add so much more to the movie. My wife has even agreed to me getting another one to run duals.

Well that makes me feel a little better. I know everone on this forum likes HSU, SVS,ED and such and I would love to have one, but they are all very large. I did not to go lower than a 10" sub so the 550wi it was. Maybe one day when I have a dedicated HT room I will go for those dual 12" subs lol!

I hear ya. Mine are in my living room LoL. yes a 10 is not that big. My 12" isnt in a big box either which was the appeal of it for me. It's much bigger than my 10 but a 10 isn't very large and would usually be perfect for a living room environment.

I do like the polk. I like the remote so I can adjust when the kids are sleeping. And at 3/4 volume it hits hard. I was watching RIO with my kids and fell asleep, a song came on and BOOM! scared the crap out of me

I was watching devil the other night. The impact noise out of nowhere made the movie very startling many times.

I just received my Polk DSW PRO 550wi a few hours ago. First impression was that it is a little larger than a lot of those compact subs, but not as bad as I was envisioning. I have seen the 440wi and 660wi and was worried that it would be as large as the 660wi. The 660wi looks like a small black mini fridge.lol! I can't wait to hear how it sounds. I think I will utilize the night mode as I have small children as well.

sgterik: Are you still thinking of switching to the Energy sub? Was the only reason for switching from the 550wi for size reasons?
