are any of them Broadcast networks that you could compare the OTA signal to cable? had to watch the Super Bowl OTA because of the motion blur over the compressed cable feed...cool.gif

I'm having an issue with my PS3. When in the XMB dashboard I am getting some noise that flickers on the screen for a split second. This happens again when launching a movie on Bluray, but it doesn't appear again during the movie, just when it's loading the disc. Any idea what is causing this? I did just buy the TV, so it just needing to break in or something?

Stations like AMC (Breaking Bad) and NESN (local New England sports like the Bruins and Red Sox) are crystal clear but ABC and others can get look really wonky at times.

Thanks for that.

What is needed on the tv side to make it work?TV doesn't see my laptop media server either

Hey guys, I just got the 60pu54 and was brave enough to go into the service menu and put in Anikuns settings. It looks great but I just had a few questions.
First, is it true like it says on the first page that it voids your warranty going into the service menu? Also how TV specific are the settings? Is it wise to calibrate like that after only a few days of use? And last, what are the risks of going into the service menu, I mean like are there permanent risks? This is my first Plasma and I'm so happy with it.

Thanks guys.

Although I have not tried it the Viera has a DLNA mode so try Toolls>DLNA and also use your Tools>ehelp. This method supposedly will allow the Panny to connect to DNLA servers. But then connection and playing may be two different things, is your PC HDMI connected?

My tv and laptop is connected to the same router.Just can't seem to get them to connect to each other

Just picked up a 50UT50 floor model with 2200hrs on it at Sears for $498! Yeah, it's been sitting on torch mode all day for about 3/4 of a year, but you can't argue with the price. Can't wait to get it home tonight and calibrate it. I'd like to thank everyone who participated in the thread for all the amazing information.
The other thing with noise, banding or other issues is not just the source but the transfer and what the show was shot on as well.
For example Walking Dead is shot on 16mm for a more old grainy look while Breaking Bad is shot with 35mm which definitely makes it look better.

My dlna connects with no problems, but both tv & htpc are wired to the same net; when I had an LG tv & Blu connected wired they connected but had constant buffering issues. Can you get on the net with tv ?

Hi everyone, I have a few questions.

Going into service mode for calibration, how am I supposed to calibrate? If I enable service mode, it switches to torch mode (whites are much brighter than when service mode is disabled even when using the same picture mode like Custom or Cinema) and other things change too, like the TV zooms in as soon as service mode is activated and I can't zoom out to 100%. So with service mode enabled, how do I calibrate the brightness if I end up having to do readings for torch mode and then turn off service only to have it dim by about 30% or so and go back to normal zoom ? I suppose I can do a before and after brightness measurement and subtract the two, and try to work with it that way, but what about colors and saturations? This seems like a huge pain in the ass, especially compared to calibrating my CRT and how it was what you see is what you get. I just don't get it.

Also, has anyone noticed any sort of bow in their panel? I thought this was a CRT specific thing, but at the top center there is a slight horizontal bow, similar to older CRT, but this is plasma. If I hold up a straight edge to the top, the top portion isn't straight, nor is the bottom now that I look at it proper. I don't suppose there is a way to correct bow on a plasma, is there?

As much as I hated the geometry issues on my older CRT, I had complete control over it entirely via service menu. Everything could be adjusted. I'm kinda hating how limited this plasma is.

Really would like some help with my PS3 problem.

For some reason my PS3 is having some instability issues with my new plasma I just bought. Is there some setting in my PS3 I need to set or on my tv for PS3? I can use my Xbox with no problems but the Ps3 gets audio cut out, every now and than, when I power up PS3 there is a a bunch of noise or snow that you can see. This is mostly when in the xmb menu and its fine when playing games and watching blurays which is odd.

I don't get this problem if I do a straight connection to my tv instead of the receiver. As soon as I plug the hdmi to receiver though I get these issues. So maybe it's a setting in the receiver? I never had this issue with my other tv so it seems like there must be some setting that needs to be changed on the TV.

There's no setting on the TV that needs to be changed. It sounds like it's a receiver issue since the audio is getting cut out too. Can you try another input on your receiver? Is your Xbox also plugged in to the receiver with HDMI?

What's strange is the audio never gets cut out during the movie or during game. Only when launching the PS3 and in the XMB menu I get the sound issue and noise snow problem. I tried other inputs and its the same. My 360 is hooked the same to receiver via hdmi.

Wow, I figured it out. I needed to turn off deep colour output on the display setting of PS3. Now the sound and picture works perfect. smile.gif

Nope, your talking about something abit different, there is banding that has to do with the panel/set , nothing to do with source, of course certain sources can hide what im talking about abit better depending on color, non-shifting/panning, but what most UT50s have is DSE, and anyone who tries to say DSE is only AR filters is big time wrong, because DSE can occur on non AR filter TVS based on the way the glass was pressed, I can spot the exact same banding issues on multiple UT50s in the same exact spots, whenever the camera pans/shifts on light colored scenes, thats the set/tv not the source, the source just simply can help hide it based on what colors are being used and how much motion isnt being used or is being used. most movies look pristine on blu-ray but King Arthur looked like crap on the beginning scenes with blue sky on top and grass on the bottem,, whenever the camera tried shifting/panning I could spot multiple of the same banding that I can spot on any other simular scenes so thats not the source.. thats the set....but nothings perfect, im returning my set for cash refund, and grabbing a different build date then Oct. 2012...been reading everywhere that build is horrible on banding..don't get me wrong though, im going to regret it abit at first because im over 250 hours, dialed in with Anikun's click values in the SM, and she looks over the top amazing wink.gif, but since certain people on this site claim they dont see the banding I can see and others claim they do, I feel im entitled to keep exchanging/refunding till I find the UT50 that has minimal banding issues, because I know for a fact its not the source, settings, grounding issue, it most def. DSE and if a majority of UT50's made this year have DSE thats noticeable, then I would hate to see a AR-filters DSE... because non-AR filter pannys def. have DSE to some extent not noticeable all the time.. but not acceptable if others manage to land a set without it. im starting to think the 60UT50 is reported less with DSE banding issues, because I know a guy who kept returning his 55UT50, then finally tried out the 60. and bam not a single DSE on all types of test scenes .. I just don't know where to find me a UT50 60 incher living in Ontario, Canada.

I seen a 60 inch model sitting right next to the UT50 I bought. I'm from Etobicoke Ontario.

Sorry but it can be the source material. There are some gorgeous scenes from this past season in Breaking Bad while banding and video noise in the sky is prevalent in Walking Dead. Same thing with some of the blu-ray transfers. I've seen some downright awful transfers causing awful banding and noise while others are pristine.

So how am I supposed to calibrate this when the picture changes from going into service mode?

Once in the service menu you have to change the picture mode to cinema and warm by pressing 7 and 9 and 3 to scroll through the cuts and drive settings make sure you write down your defaults, the only mode I changed was cinema.

That's not the problem. The problem is, lets say my normal light output reading for Cinema mode is a FTL of 30. When I go to the service menu, it shoots up to about 50 FTL, even after switching Cinema mode. Vivid (the first mode Service switches to) is even higher compared to normal Vivid. It's like that for all picture modes. It also zooms in to like, HD Size 1 or something, instead of simply keeping the aspect as I originally had it. What gives? Is this how the TV's normally behave?

So again, how am I supposed to take accurate readings and make adjustments if exiting service mode is going to dim it by about 30%?

Odd that you have a change in brightness when you enter the service menu. I don't have that issue. The overscan is a "bug" of the firmware update. The service menu should use the picture mode settings you specify in the regular menu. But you really only need to get white balance right. True, brightness and contrast affect it, but not that much.

Ok, so that's definitely not just me then? I thought that was odd. When I would calibrate my XBR910, it was pretty much WYSIWYG, no hops in brightness or whatever other than the changes I made in both the service and regular menu. Also, has anyone noticed a bow in the picture, like the top lines not being straight? Is this panel possibly defective? All I've been doing since I got the TV is pretty much break it in and watch content. I still have time to return it if I want.
I've not noticed anything like that. I would check with something you know has a straight edge across the picture, like a PC desktop or pictures viewed back on a flash drive on the TV, and put it directly to the TV's input so you know it's not possibly being altered by an AVR or something. I don't think plasma TVs are affected from magnets, but with a CRT a magnet would cause something like that and messed up color.

PC direct into the display, no AVR. Very slight bow on the bottom, and on the top a pretty noticeable one. Bottom left and right corners measure 5/32 an inch from the edge of the image to the bezel. Bottom center is 3/32. Top left and right corners are 7/32 and top center is 3/32. If the bezel is straight, which it appears to be, then this is a definite convex bow in the image. These are fixed pixel right? So then that means the pixels aren't aligned in a straight line.

There is also a slight motion blur, especially noticeable in fighting games where the characters move fast. No motion smoothing has been turned on since those are 60 fps, but coming from regular CRT usage, I can definitely see the motion blur. It's really odd and distracting, mainly effecting the characters and not so much the backgrounds. I thought plasma was the only current display to match the motion of CRT.

This issue on top of the weird service menu bug really makes me not trust in plasma at all. Is this normal? Could you check a few of your displays for a bow? Easily checked by measuring the distance from the bezel to the edge of the image. Could you also check the service menu and see if the FTL is popping to higher degrees? This is most easily tested with a 10% white window being displayed with the TV in normal mode and then switched over to service mode. If you could check those few things on your own display(s) I would greatly appreciate it. I'll most likely end up taking this unit back, unless this is just normal behavior of the UT50. I may end up looking into a ST50.
I would exchange it because of the bowing picture. I don't think my output brightness ever changed between service menu and not.
