Need some advice/help/recommendations

So I bought a Sony HXR-MC50E second hand and I did not do my homework to then find the Sony does not have an option to turn of AGC on the audio. So when I plug in my Rode videomic pro, all I get is a loud hissing noise.

I have done tests to see if it is the Rode. It is not. And other people have complained about other Sony camcorders having this problem.

So I've decided to downgrade it I suppose. I was looking at the Canon HF S30 and Panasonic TM900 before getting the Sony. But looks like I'm faced with the same decision. Can't decide which one to get. I'm leaning more towards the Panasonic.

So can anyone point me in the right direction? Or suggest another camcorder to look at?

I can't help with a test because I don't have a mic like yours.

Best I can do is look in the TM900 instruction manual. It says you can turn off AGC for both the on-board mic and an external mic, but you must remain in manual mode. If you turn on intelligent auto (iA) the AGC comes back on.

Thank you Bill, very helpful. Better look into an online manual of the S30 and see if it does the same thing. Would you recommend the TM900?

I don't have the TM900. I bought a SDT750- because, at the time, it was heavily discounted. The spec sheets and instruction manuals suggested they were nearly the same cameras, except that the 750 was packaged as a 3D kit with a add on lens that was so ugly, nobody bought them until discounted.

Assuming they are the same, or nearly the same, I would highly recommend the TM900 because I'm very happy with SDT750. But, I have experience with only one other camcorder, so am probably not the best source.
