Panasonic TH-50px - Half Screen Problem (Right Side) - SOLVED

My Plasma couldn't pick up a better time for this! It just developed some vertical lines on the right side of the screen. They appear to come and go from time to time. But last night they were there for the entire game. It's a: TH-50PX60U

I was searching all night for a similar problem and couldn't find the same issue or a reference to which board and how to troubleshoot.

I'm no TV tech, but I'm a very good computer tech (assembly). Right know I don't have the money for a new unit. So, I'm planning to open the unit this weekend and search for bulging capacitors and/or lose connections. Maybe It's just a capacitor replacement issue.

  • Does anyone knows which parts should I look for replacement given the symptoms?
  • Can some one point me to which parts should I not touch? I know that TVs have some capacitors that store a lot of power.
  • Is there any board diagram online?
  • Any reference on the approximate cost of boards?

I'll really appreciate any help on this! It's Playoff time and I can't stand watching games with this problem.

The rest of the model number would help as this determines the year/generation of the set.
I would suspect a defective D-Board if it has one. If not, then I would suspect a bad A-Board is causing the distortion.

Thanks EG3,

It's a: TH-50PX60U. Just found a troubleshooting PDF: PX60_Troubleshooting_Charts.pdf

It shows "D Board (or C1, or Panel)" for right-side panel issues. I'm worried that if I continue to use the TV with the issue the lines will burn-in.

Does someone knows if "TNPA3820ACS" is the correct model number for a D-Board on this particular model? I just extracted the info from a: PX60_Troubleshooting_Charts.pdf

The D-board photo does not show any capacitors on it. So it will probably be a circuit issue and I'll be better replacing it. I was looking on auctions sites and it appears the cost is somewhere around $50-$160

That is a good possibility. I would advise not to use the set until you get the issue resolved (except for troubleshooting of course).
Your set has a D-Board. There is a cable (LVDS) that runs from the DG-Board to the D-Board (DG5-D5, possibly?) I would start by re-seatting this connection at both ends. I wouldn't mess around too much with the C-boards or panel ribbon connectors just yet.
The distortion looks like it starts dead center of the screen and is made up of uniform repeating lines. That is a good indicator of a defective D-Board.
TNPA3820ACS is a good part# for the D-Board.
These were/are good sets. They are workhorses that had less failures and fewer problems than the newer models.

Thanks EG3!

I just found a few auctions between $40-$70 for the board. Looking at the PDF diagram the D-Board there are lots of bolts, connectors and parts to remove. But seams like a straight forward fix.

Since I'll be replacing with a used/refurbish part. Is this a common occurrence on this units/parts? Should I look for a new part instead?

I'll try to take pictures of the procedure. Maybe I could post a DIY once fixed.

Just to let people know the problem is solved. I bought the D-Board (TNPA3820ACS) and installed the part this past weekend. The plasma is working great again. smile.gif

I'll took some pictures of the procedure and will try to write a how to. The replacement was really easy. Took me around 1-2 1/2 hrs because I was very careful detailing every disconnected cable and taking pictures. There are a lot of bolts to unscrew and around 10-12 board connectors / cables to disconnect.

A few TV repair companies quote me around $300 - $500 to diagnose, transport and repair the unit. Thanks to this board and EG3 help I was able to get it done with a $35 part and about 2hrs of my weekend time. At the end it was great experience and satisfaction to repair it myself.

THANKS AVS & EG3!

This was my first time posting over an AV forum. The EG3 advice really help me to diagnose and repair the unit ,and saving a lot of $$$ in the process. But most, is the learning experience, and hopes this post will help someone with the same problem to get an idea of the possible cause and expected repair cost.

I too like to help people over computer and automotive forums as well. I hate to see when people (specially elderly) how doesn't know about computers, internals/software (or specific electronics in general) are often ripped by bad companies/technicians who charge $$$$ with the excuse that the computer/electronic has a damaged (flux capacitor) which is interfering with the (memory CPU controller) causing an (IP Address Overflaping) which is the original cause for the computer rebooting and not connecting to the Internet. mad.gif True story and is happening every day...
