Digital Signage in Bar

I am starting a new project at my place of employment and it requires me converting over their current digital signage system. They are currently running it through an old PC to TV converter box over coax. The picture quality is horrible. I am wanting to convert it to HD.

The solution that I thought up was to convert the computer output to HDMI (or install a new HDMI graphics card) to a HDMI splitter that runs over CAT6 cable.

I found two different models on MonoPrice that both look very good, however the first unit

(monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=109&cp_id=10113&cs_id=1011307&p_id=8207&seq=1&format=2)

utilizes two cat6 connections per TV while the second model

(monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=101&cp_id=10113&cs_id=1011307&p_id=8159&seq=1&format=4#feedback)

utilizes only one cable.

Obviously, I would much rather run only one cable, however I am worried about video loss. I want to get the better unit, and if running two cables would provide a superior picture, then I would rather go that route. If the single cable will produce a picture just as good, then for the sake of simplicity I would rather go with that.

The specifications and descriptions are pretty similar. I cant find any differences between the two besides the number of cords you have to run.

The reason we are switching over to HD is for clairity in text. We are going to have twitter feeds and menus on the TV's and small fonts right now are impossible to read.

Any input on this would be great! or if there are better solutions out there, I would not be opposed to hearing them

Thanks so much!

You should probably take a look at the digital signage products to drive this with a unit attached to the display instead of the "old way" of a remote PC doing the work. Certainly for displaying menus there are lots of solutions. Twitter feed, not sure...

The advantage of the embedded systems for signage is cost and reliability. Nothing worse than a blue screen error message where the menu should be.

Depending on price, that may be a possibility.

Do you have any more info on these systems? Thank you!

There is an entire industry around "digital signage".

I'd explore the expo's vendor list and websites...

For example:

If you decide to do a single PC and distribute it, I would look into doing VGA distribution instead of HDMI. A well-done system can still push 1080p (although 720p would be easier), and the hardware will be much cheaper and more reliable.

The downside is if you ever want to do HD video from a sat box or something. Not impossible over VGA (yet...), just requires more work/hardware.
