Back speaker height compared to surround speaker height

Okay, I can't find this officially anywhere.

Regarding surround and back speaker placement. I've got the surrounds at 2 feet above seated ear level and just behind the seat. What about the left and right back speakers? I like the Dolby placement at 135-150 degrees, but I have seen nothing about height. Wouldn't you want them at the same height as the surround speakers on the sides to maintain more of a seamless soundfield?

Thanks,

John

Yes. In my case, they are further away than the side surrounds, so I matched the elevation angles by placing the rears a little higher. Not a bad idea since the rear seats are in a riser, so it helps for them, too.

This is interesting, and I have a similar question - my dipole surrounds are currently mounted at the ideal height (2 feet above ear level) beside the listening position. I am about to mount two surround back speakers on my back wall, which is about 4 feet behind the couch. The problem is that my wife is not comfortable with the surround back speakers being mounted at the same height since people might more easily run into them when coming out of either of the doors along the back wall (the speakers would be mounted between two doors on the back wall). Is it acceptable to raise the height of the speakers so they are not a hazard, but then angle them down toward the listening position? Should they be aimed right AT the listeners ears, or should they aim ABOVE the listener's head so that the surround effects are not too directional? Any advice would be appreciated - thanks...

I have them 4 feet above the ears but angled down.

Chikoo, do you have them angled so that they are firing directly toward ear level, or do you have them still aimed somewhat above ear level?

They are on a wall 2 feet behind the sofa, 4 feet above, angled down towards the sofa.

Got it - thanks for the visual. How do they sound in that setup?
