Music Sub

Hey All,

So I've read through every post I could find and I came away with some general thoughts, but my needs are slightly different than most of what I found, so I thought it would be worth asking. I need a sub for approximately 70% music use and 30% game use. No movies for this setup. It will be used with a pair of Aperion Grand Verus bookshelf speakers and a Marantz SR4023 receiver. The setup is all near field at a desk, so the sub could be placed very close to me. Of course I could move it further away if that would work better. My budget is $500. Any thoughts are appreciated, thanks!

You could get a sub specifically designed for a near field music setup

Hmm, these subs come to mind based on your description:

Please enlighten me on how you get the Rumba for $500 delivered. Last I read it is $550 plus shipping and it weighs 85 pounds in the carton. At about the roughly $650 delivered price point, I would much rather have an SVS SB-12 NSD...

Also, the Rumba only has a 2 year warranty on the driver and the amp. That is probably the skimpiest warrantiy among the usual ID brands including HSU, Epik, and especially SVS which gives 5 years on both the amp and driver.

+1 to the X-Ref 10.

I just installed an Emotiva X-ref 10 last week, using it with DefTech ProMonitor 1000s (x4) and ProCenter 2000 in a smallish room and a quasi-nearfield setup. I'm very impressed with the musicality of this sub (which was my hope and my reason for choosing it), with how well it blends with my speakers using an 80Hz crossover, and with how much subjective bottom-end heft it seems to have on movies (certainly more than enough for me). Emotiva seems to be a well-regarded company, and the warranty is good.

Here is a similar thread and one of the suggestions is the Aperion Bravus sub, which would work well for you. Also mentioned is the HSU STF-2.

And this tidbit (AKA ragging on a company for no good reason) has what to do with the OP's question.

I would opt for the Epik Legend (I have two of them). Very musical, more so IMO than
HSU (of which I've had ALOT of them). HSU better for home theater, Epik for music.
3 yr warrenty on amp and driver. $499 but shipping could run you as high as $50.
But I think they have a new lower shipping rate.

Anyhow, good luck...

Ah spyboy you know how AVS works. "For a couple dollars more you can have..." And since you mentioned the SB12nsd:

Besides, it doesn't hurt to show the OP a few other options. I personally think the X-ref 10 would work best in this situation at his budget.

Check out the sealed Rythmiks, a tad over budget but its designed for music
post #13 of 17
^^^

Rythmik products have come up regularly in my search for musical subs, but sealed may not be the optimal choice for my particular room of approx. 6000cf. Which leads to an important point - nobody knows yet the size of the OP's room.

That may not be an issue if it will be a nearfield setup.

Good point, apologies for missing this.

Hey Everyone,

Thanks so much for all the responses. I apologize for not getting back in a timely manner but unfortunately I have been computer-less for about the last week.

Does anyone have any input on this sub? I haven't been able to find any serious reviews on it.

The Emotiva definitely looks like a good choice. Unfortunately the Epik Legend is a bit out of my price range.

I actually have that very sub in my living room setup. Sadly that setup doesn't get as much use so I didn't want to invest as much in it. I haven't tried it in this setup, maybe I should.

Unfortunately the Rythmiks are well out of my price range. Look like excellent subs though.

Yes, it will be in a nearfield setup.

The other question I have is that while the Marantz SR4023 has a sub out ouput, I can't seem to figure out how to control crossover with it. Is it a problem for the sub to handle that instead of the receiver?

For just music and games, why not save some money and get the Energy S10.3 for around $200. Another to consider is Lava Subs. They are supposed ot be pretty good on music and also are at a lower price point.

If I had a music only system, I would at least give the Lava's a try. If they weren't better than the 10.3, I would return them and get the 10.3. Of course, I've spent my sub budget on something more HT oriented, and I spent it twice.

For the next price point up, I would choose the X-Ref; based on internt reading, alone.
