Lossless Music Downloads?

Where does everybody go to get lossless music downloads - legally?

After having my music library get wiped out I'm now re-ripping everything as FLAC files using Exact Audio Copy. But for individual downloads, where can you go to get high quality downloads, preferably in .wav or flac format? (or is there even such a place?)

I've seen HD Tracks but for most of their stuff you have to buy the whole album, and its expensive (24 bit), which I don't really have the support for anyway.

And there's always ALAC, but downloading ALAC and converting to flac sounds like a pain.

So what do people do for music downloads, is there a good place to go for lossless? Or should I just suck it up and stick with MP3 when downloading individual tracks?

Thanks for any replies.

Absolute majority of loss less audio is consumed on Apple's devices. That is why you see ALAC downloads, but not FLAC. With proper set of tools it shouldn't be that hard to play or transcode tracks. You can do it individually or in batch mode. But keep in mind that MP3 is a format of choice for most users. If you deviate from mainstream for any reason, expect more effort of money spent.

Thanks ap1, I guess I'll have to look around for some good transcoding programs then. I was trying to avoid Apple altogether because I don't really like proprietary software (or proprietary anything for that matter). But if they're the only ones who offer a wide variety of lossless music then I guess I'll have to go through iTunes. The other retailers need to offer more options IMO, I used to go through Amazon for downloads but all they offer is MP3, which doesn't sound the greatest through my system.

I think I might have posted this thread in the wrong form.... I thought I had posted in the software forum. Oh well.

I agree to stay away from proprietary but ALAC is now open, and its support in devices is on the increase. That said all of my lossless is flac. I prefer to stay lossless but this won't stop me from purchasing 320kbps MP3 from Amazon or Google. I can't hear a difference and the cost difference isn't worth it.

Wow, so I installed iTunes on my computer, only to find they do not offer downloads in ALAC format. I thought I had read somewhere that they did.

I'm surprised there's not really any support for this, seems like an untapped market. I guess I'll just have to stick with Amazon MP3 for individual tracks.

Almost all of hd tracks downloads are available at 16/44. Even many of the high res 24 bit recordings have a cheaper purchase option of 16/44.
