Projector Choice HD20 or H6500

Hello Projector guys,

I am new to the projector scene but have been reading up so I have a basic understanding of projector terminology. I plan on replacing my 32 inch LCD with a sub $1,000 projector and have decided on either the Optoma HD20 or the Acer H6500. I have looked at the reviews on projector central and they have suggested that the HD20 is better than the H6500 for home theatre, which is what I will be using it for. However, as the HD20 is from 2009 do I really want to be purchasing a PJ which is 3 years old versus a current model? The way technology moves I would have thought that 3 years would have made the HD20 a bit of a dinosaur...

Looking at amazon, there is an $80 price difference, so the difference in price is negligible. I would get a squaretrade warranty for it, so warranty is not an issue either.

I am leaning towards the HD20 just because of the projector central review but if any of you guys can offer any advice I would appreciate hearing it.

Thanks!

DLP tech hasn't changed much, mostly it is LCD and LCOS that advance. The main issue to worry about with DLP tech is the Rainbows that you might see if you are RBE sensitive, although it isn't that common (1 in 5 to 1 in 10 people will be bothered in general). Which projector is better is relative, all projectors have different strengths and weaknesses. Between these two projectors, the Optoma hd20 is the safer bet as it has been well tested in the forums, and the Acer h6500 could have various issues (it is not a common unit for people to buy). I cannot say which one is actually better, but going by reviews the Optoma hd20 probably is.

Keep in mind the Optoma hd20 works better with mid-sized screens (generally less than 120"), as it has similar brightness to the Mitsubishi hc4000. The Mits hc4000 is better if you can spend $200 more, as a matter of fact I would recommend the Mits well above the hd20. Besides the fact that the Mits is sharper, has darker blacks, it also has FAR more accurate color OOTB than the hd20, which means as a new projector owner you don't really need to calibrate it, and the hd20 is going to be far less accurate of an image. That $200 difference in price is well worth it even if you have to scrounge for the $200.

See my post here which compares the different strengths of the DLP's in the $1000 price range:
