Need opinion on new TV

Hey guys,

I'm in the process of starting over with choosing a new tv for my mancave. I currently have a Samsung UN65D8000 that is being returned to Samsung for a refund. This was my third 65D8000 and all of them had the same problems, severe clouding, flashlighting, crosstalk and ghosting. I owned a 60D8000 and had very little to no clouding and flashlighting and no ghosting or crosstalk whatsoever in 3D. I loved the tv so much, I returned the 60" for a 65" and to my dismay, have had nothing but problems out of the 65" After talking with numerous people at Samsung, it was brought to my attention that there is a known defect in all of the 65" models. After hearing that, I've decided it's time to move on from that TV.

There are currently four tv's at the top of my list. And in no particular order they are

Samsung UN65ES8000 (should be available by late June or early July)
Sharp LC-80LE844U
Panasonic 65VT50
Mitsubishi L75-A94

Before people start throwing stones at me, I realize I left off two very important and well performing TV's. The Sharp Elite XFD and the Sony HX929. Plain and simple, the Sharp is too expensive and after viewing a demo of the Sony 65HX929 at Fry's Electronics, I was not impressed by the 3D picture. Sorry Sony owners, too much ghosting and crosstalk for my taste.

After looking at my top four choices, you'll notice there are two major features I'm looking for. Screen Size and 3D! I just cannot go below a 65" especially because I enjoy 3D. It's meant to be seen on as big a screen as possible. Right now my gut is saying either the Samsung or Mits. The reason I say that is mainly due to the fact that I like displays that POP! Now again, please don't trash me for this but I like to keep my TV backlight up, contrast up and colors popping. I don't like turning the backlight down and going for those realistic and dull colors. I also like keeping the motion enhancers cranked up and prefer the soap opera look. I know that's considered a sin on these forums but it's my preference. I'm looking for free major factors here. Screen Size, 3D Performance and 2D picture quality. If I can find at least one tv that has two of these as titles, then that's what I'm looking for. Any help, suggestions or comments are welcomed and appreciated. Thanks!

I would remove Mitsubishi from your list. They are the very bottom of the barrel in reliability.

So I've read. But the main problem I happened to see on the forums were related to shipping. It seems that alot of tv's were damaged or not properly handled by trucking companies. Hypothetically speaking, if I were to get a Mits Laservue tv that had no issues, how would it compare in 2D and 3D pic quality to the others?

The VT50 won the recent Value Electronics shootout. And D-Nice wrote that the VT50 is the only current display he would consider if his Kuro died. Enough said.

Your chances of getting a Mits with no issues are apparently rather low. No matter to me whether you buy a Mits or not. Your decision.

Yes, but if you look the OP is not looking for contrast or accurate colors. He basically likes dynamic and LED panels will provide the most of that.

Sharps quatron panels have the brightest picture but 3D is not as good as Samsung (but sold overall). The Sharp will however provide the best 3D image due to sheer size which is important for 3D.

That's what I was thinking. Samsung will have a better overall 3D pic quality but the 80" will likely pop off the screen more. I'm not trashing the Panasonic, I just don't know if I would like the overall dimmer picture compared to an LED. Would you happen to know how the 3D image is on the VT50?

Both plasma and LED technologies have their pros and cons. You did list the VT50 as one of your choices, and it won best PQ in a head-to-head shootout (beating the Sharp Elite LED). Only you can decide which tech is better for you. Yes LEDs are generally brighter, but 3D is generally better on plasmas, with significantly better side angle viewing. Go see in stores which is better for you, bearing in mind that LEDs do show better in store lighting, but IMO plasma looks better overall at home, especially in the dark.

Thanks for the info. I'll go check some best buy's in my area to see if they have any VT50's on display. Thanks for the help

No I have not. If you skim through the plasma forum though the reviews have been good.

Thats not what he said. He said that in case ONE of his 4(?) Kuro's died he would replace it by a VT50. If all four of his Kuro's would die simultaneously he would probably fall into a deep depression

Are any of those sets even full array backlit local dimming?

You start yourt post complaining of clouding and flashlighting.

Be prepared to be unhappy if your buying lcd led without local dimming.

Go with the plasma.

The Samsung is not, but I'm not sure about the Sharp 80". Either way, full array backlighting isnt without it's cons as well. I've owned a couple full array LEDs and had issues with blooming that's just as bad as clouding and flashlighting in my book.

Having said that, I went to BB today and checked out the VT50 and was very impressed with the pic quality for a plasma. They had it set on THX Bright Room and it looked great in a bright lit environment. I plan on going back and testing the 3d when I get a chance.

Sounds like I might finally take a dive for a plasma..........
