Denon 2312 speaker set up issues

Receiver: Denon 2312
Speakers: Four (4) Mirage OS3 Sat, One (1) OS3-CC (center)
Setup: Directv composite into Denon, WDTV+ HDMI into Denon, HDMI out to Toshiba LED
Issue:
While watching Directv, I can only receive audio from FR and FL in Stereo or Direct audio modes.
Through WDTV+, I receive audio only through RR and RL in almost all other modes (some more faint than others).
When I attempt the Setup Wizard --> Speaker Calibration setup, the front speakers produce no sound and I receive the message "Caution - No Microphone or Speaker".

The speakers are connected correctly (I can hear the fronts in some settings and the rears in others). What am i missing? This is driving me nuts..

Thanks for any help!

Who did you buy the receiver from??? Sounds like it's defective. Better return for a refund or exchange, if they have any more.

Good luck

Why would you have a composite connection from the DTV box which can only pass stereo audio? Connect the DTV box with an HDMI cable to the AVR. Reset the microprocessor (p. 144) and try doing the AUTO SETUP again. Ensure the mic cable is securely plugged in to the mic jack.

Thanks jdsmooth.

I haven't upgraded to DirecTV HD yet, ergo the composite connection. I previously reset the Microporcessor and went through setup again, but still experience the same issue.

I don't mind stereo for DTV, but would expect that the WDTV+ would pass surround. I would also expect the test tones to work in all speakers, but only work for the rears.

Also, before I installed the front OS3's, the OS3-CC center channel worked with an old bose system.

Let me know if you have any other ideas.

Thanks again,

You have a "7.1 surround AVR" so with your current 5.1 setup you should expect 5.1 surround audio to your speakers from any source regardless of whether it's 2CH stereo or DD/DTS 5.1. Even with a composite audio connection, you should still be able to select "DD PLII" to simulate 5.1 surround audio. Also note that in a 5.1 setup, the surrounds are "side" surrounds, not rears which is why they are connected to the SL/SR (surround L/R) speaker posts and not the SBL/SBR (surround back L/R) speaker posts. Try powering off the AVR, unplugging it for 10 minutes, and power back ON again doing another microprocessor reset, ensuring you let the front panel display flash for at least 4-5 seconds. Verify speaker wires are securely connected to the speaker posts at both ends.

The connections are all correct and secure. I have the "rear surrounds" set up as Zone 2 for outdoor speakers.

I unplugged the AVR for a couple of hours, then powered on with microprocessor reset. The DirecTV was in stereo. I went to the WDTV+ source, and only the center channel was playing. So I plugged in the microphone and the calibration menu popped up. I thought "alright, here we go", but was once again stymied by the "caution - no microphone or speaker" message.

Odd thing is, when I exited the auto setup, the center channel quit playing and I went back to my original problem - Only the surrounds will play, and only in modes other than Stereo or Direct. And test tones only work in side surrounds.

By the way, whenever I enter and exit the speaker calibration setup, the AVR makes a loud clicking sound.

Thanks for your help!

So just to confirm ... when the DVR is playing, audio is coming through the FL/FR main speakers with AMP ASSIGN set to Zone 2? Also do you have the "Front Speaker Setup" (p. 105) set to "Front A" for Mult CH audio?

jdsmoothie - I appreciate your help.

I read over the weekend that the WDTV Live + does not support surround sound over HDMI. So I purchased an SPDIF optical cable to connect from the WDTV to the AVR. I'm still experiencing the same issue (sound only coming from surrounds), but think I need to play around with the audio output settings. Does it matter into which HDMI input the WDTVLive+ box is connected? It currently plugs into the BD (Blueray Disc) input.

To answer your questions,
when the DVR is playing, audio is coming through the FL/FR main speakers with AMP ASSIGN set to Zone 2? If DVR = DirecTV, then YES.

Also do you have the "Front Speaker Setup" (p. 105) set to "Front A" for Mult CH audio? When the AMP ASSIGN is set to Zone2, the "Front A / Front B / Front A+B" options do not appear in Speaker Setup.

If you've done a few more microprocessor resets with no change, then it's time to exchange it.
